Story and Photos by Gary F lee twood HINSDALE, Ill ., Aug. 21 - After a rai n-out of the AMA National Championship Short Track race sdleduled for Saturday night, August 16, the show finally got off the ground last Wednesday. A big crowd was in attendance and all the point-hungry Experts and Amateurs were on hand to do battle at the pi cturesquely situated Santa Fe oval in the suburbs of Chicago. Two Expert semis decided the rioat' 12-man lineup for the feature, with Nell Keen (Yamaha) winning the first preliminary eve nt over Gene Romero (Yamaha) and Dick Mann (Os s a). Steady Freddie Nix (H-D) captured the second semi ahead of Chuck Palmgren (Triumph) and Bart Markel (H-D), who was his only serious challenger for the entire distance. Dick Mann's Ossa was fir s t to break the Harley domination with a third place finis h. Then came Ronnie Rail on a BSA, Palmgren, and the current National point leader, Triumph-mounted Gary Nixon. Cal Rayborn (25) didn' t make the Main, but #65 AI Gaskill grabbed 8th, Bart Markel (4) was run' nerup to Nix In fea lure eyenl.
