Story by John Shedd Photos by B111 Pettigrew and John Shedd CARLSBAD, Cal., Aug. 11 - The California MOW-Crass Club's first even t for August, was held for charity. The proceeds went to the Carlsbad Boys Club, who in tum came out and helped nag while enjoying the day's races. Penlon- mounted, Gary Bailey led the pack of 12500 Experts away from the line in the day's firsi race. Giving chase were Frank Morgan (Hodaka) and Tom Rapp (Hodaka). Guazzoni-mounied Tim Hart moved up and picked off Rapp and Morgan 10 t a k e over second behind Bailey. Bailey took a splll which cost him three positions before remounting and made a fantastio attempt to regain the lead from Hart coming out of the mudhole, but was unable 10 get by, and Hart took the cheokered flag. Bailey Takes Over In the second moto, E . Barker took the lead on a Penlon with Bailey moving up to lake over on the third lap. Morgan moved up 10 third, but Rapp and Hart both passed him to finish second and third behind the Penlon Pusher, Bailey. Bailey had the third moto sewed up from start to finish. Hart went out with mechanical woes, while running second , and Rapp moved up 10 finish behind Bailey. The point tally gave the win to Bailey with Rapp second and Hart third. The 25000 Juniors ran two separaie cl1v1sions . Greeves-mounted, J . Wilson won all three motos of the first cl1vision to lake the win. Yamaha rider R . Ban was second and D. Keefe finished third on a Husky. The second 250co cl1v1sion of Juniors looked like a-carbon copy of the first with G. Smith walking away with all three motes, M . Pera, CZ-mounted, finished second and Yamaha -mounied Bob Maynard, third. D. Eckhardt was back again 10 chalk up two wins in a row on his Matchless, mu ch to the delight of the thumper fans. B_ Campen was second in the 500cc Junior class on a Triumph , and F. Russ o was third on a Husky . Prize money was limited because it was a charity event, so the 250 and 500cc Expert classes ran as one, with money peing paid back nine places. Ron Nelson (Moniesa) took the lead from the flag with LarsLarsson(Maico), John DeSoto (Moniesa 250co), Russ Darnell (Husky 250cc) and Gary Bailey (Greeves) in torrid pursuit. Larsson took over the lead from Nelson, and Bailey moved up to third. Nelson pushed just a little too hard, which cost him many positions, and Bailey moved into the #2 slot. Darnell moved up to third, Steve Hurd (Kawasaki 250co) to fourth and Preston Petty (Suzuki 250cc ) to fifth. Hurd dropped way back and Preston moved up to finish fourth. following him by. Nelson grabbed the lead in the final le g, and Larsson immecl1aiely took over by pass ing him in the narrow mudhole. DeSolo was running a close third with Darnell and Bailey following . Nelson hurt his foot and had to drop out and Darnell moved up into the second position with Bailey third and Maicomounted Walt Axthelm, fourth. Winning all three legs, Larsson took the biggest share of the loot. Balley earned second place laurels followed by Darnell, who was the first 250cc finisher, Axthelm and Nelson. Over the back course jump goes SuzukiĀ· mounted #11 Preston PettY. It was a good meet, and the Boys Club took home a sizeable chunk of dough. Preston Petty was gossip subject of the day . He flew to the event in his new plane and landed on the Carlsbad dragstrtp, only a few feet away from the pits. Is there any other moto-cross course that can boast a lancl1ng tleld? What Carlsbad ain't got, moto-cross riders don't need. The CMC says come on out ror their next moto-cross on August 25, bring a couple of friends, and have a blast. (Results on page 16) La rsson Grabs Loot On the second leg, Nelson again took the lead, and Larsson again look it away from him. John Maynard was running third on a 2500c Bullaco with Darnell a close fourth. Bailey moved up to lake over third from Maynard with Darnell, Lon Peterson (250cc CZ ) and Hurd Gary Ball ey (Penton) comlngoutof themudhole.
