e ~ WILLIAMS WINS SIDEWINDERS SORTIE By J.K. Lacey Photos by Don Abrahamson & Frank Clay Q) PORTLAND, ore., Aug. 2- On thispar~ tlcular cool evening one couldn't have .... found a better show iinywhere for the 0\>' price of two small skins than the one :: being put on by the twist and turn group ~ at the Sidewinders hillside TT course in e Portland. Just as the poster says, thrills, ~ chills were supplied aplenty. Ii} Local Novice terror Jack Matt put '" spurs to his BSA to win the Novice Tro'" phy Dash but Al Brackenbury was always ~ there to take over should Matt slip, until kl Al over-did himself and crashed. in the <: Maln Brackenbury passed Matt after sorting him out for a lap or so ( this is U the first time this youngster Matt has ~ been passed here this year!) then began U to stretch It out somewhat and Matt fell further behind when he almost slid down. '4. ::i Now in four th and seemingly out of contention here cam e little Jackie, all stops pulled, picking off one rider after the other, and with the crowd on their feet he went 'wide off the hill for a better drive and got under the Honda as the yellow flag came out. From there It was an easy one lap to the checker, Matt picking up his third Main Event win here, Brackenbury In for second, and way back It was Mike Downing third. The Amateurs had their fun too. Ike Reed (Triumph) fell during practice but, undisturbed, won his heat as did the yearlong Amateur point leader Dave Sheffel, also Triumph. Dash time and Reed chased Sheffel to the flag, his second I:ash win of the year, while Lance Margeson, the Portland school teacher, watched from arrears. Reed turned the tables in the Main, however, when the big dollars were at stake and led Sheffel home by a wide margin while Dave In tur n did the sam e to BSA-mounted Ke n t Hansen. FinIs hing s econd was Carroll Skov. In the lOOCc Main Event, Dave' s only competiti on was last year's number two contender, Russ Robinson. Russ hasn't been riding much this year and was not able to contend with Dave's speed. The TT events saw a different story unfold - at leas t in the Trophy Dash . Russ Robinson captured the 100cc I:ash when Dave went too wide on turn #2 and let the pack of riders get by him . He was never able to recapture his lead. in the Maln Event, however, Russ had some engine trouble and Dave was able to hold his lead even though Jimmy Raymond was In hot pursuit, In the 250cc TT Trophy I:ash, Randy Ellis (Bultaco) had an easy win. He also qualified for the pole position in the 250cc TT Main. Next to Randy was Eddie Walker. Eddie got off to a fast start and pulled out in front with Dan Jones, running in second place. ORAN CO., Cal., Aug. 7 - Wednesday GE night saw another big night for the fla ttracker s and TT fans. It might better have been cal led Dave Aldana night, since Dave r eally gave the other boys a rough way to go. Qualifying first in his heat r ace and moving automatically into the Trophy and Main Events, Dave was able to capture both the lOOcc Trophy Dash and the 250Cc trophy as well as winning the lOOCc Main and the 250 flattrack Main Events. Dashing Dave The only fellow who gave Dave a hard time In the 250cc flattrack event was Randy Ellis, Bultaco-rnounted, Randy was able to get by Aldana on the fifth lap Ellis Solves Problem BRIDSESTONE Going into turn #1, Randy's Bultaco fouled and he was forced to stop and clear It out. By this time, the entire field had passed him and had entered turn #2. Ellis got his machine cleared out and started picking off one rider after another. In the eighth lap of the ten-lap final, Randy was able to get by Eddie Walker going over the jump and pulled off Into the lead, winning the Main. Second place went to Dan Jones, followed by Carroll Hleland. With a few li ttle problems still to be ironed out on the TT course, the Orang e County motorcycle fans look forward to TT and flattrack racing next Wednesday night . Orange, Cali f•• (114) 633-1344 Expert Mark WUliams won his fourth Trophy Dash and his third Main Event here amid such stomping, screaming, and carrying-on as you never saw. Triumph-mounted Dick Jagow, National Number 97, had a two-week win streak going and It looked like he was going to succeed in making It three, as out of the hole he shot and blasted Into the lead. Two laps later Williams (Triumph) sprung loose and gave It his all to catch the "Iron Man" Jagow and soon they were touring the track as one. The pressure was on and Wllllams forged beside Jagow almost at will but out In the loose stuff he didn' t get the traction and time and again that spinning rear wheel let Jagow pull ahead again. Back fighting for third and locked In deadly battle were Ray Carroll (Triumph), T.L. Hogland (Norton) and Gary Davis (Triumph), with Davis nailing one and then the other. Their race was good, but the fans were watching the money race, thatchase-and-be-chased for first. Lap after lap Williams dogged Jagow trying Inside then out, always wide off the down-hill so that he might cut the corner closer with a better drive and get under the leader as Matt had done earlier. But Dick was having none of that and always steered out of the tricky bottom corner and across the finish line just yards away, as the laps wore on. The yellow flag waved and one lap to go, Williams right on Jagow's rear wheel. Down the hill they charged to that last bottom corner and what? Jagow slid wide; he was going too fast, almostlosing 1tl As every lap before Williams was right there on the inside, this time with the better drive and he wheelled across the line for his fiercely fought-for win. The terrific pressure he'd put on paid off. Wllliams won It, or Jagow lost It. Makes no d1fference. It's races like that that will bring every one of the witnessing fans r ight back again the next Friday night.
