A Close Race To The Finish 6 The new and the old met once again Friday night but this time two different [aces sto le the show and made the race the best expert final this year. First year expert Chris Draayer and veteran Ralph W hite supplied the action [rom start to finish . • Inc. 218 main 51. venice, calif. now distributor for EAR Motorcycle Tires & T bes Dan Haaby took an early l ead with Whit e, hi s t eammat e, runn i ng right alongside. Draayer was of f the line i n fifth spot wi th t he enti re pack running three and fo ur abreast . Haaby and Whit e were exactly even as they crosse d the line to comple te lap four wi th Dr aay er ri ght behind , i n third . T he Salt L ak e Flyer then moved to second as White t ook the l ead, dro pping Haaby all t he way back to third. It was H-D and BSA the rest of the way with Dr aay er shooti ng to the front on l ap eight . He was unab l e to shak e l oose from Whit e and th e t wo rode side by si de most of th e way t o t he fi ni sh. one- time novice trip around th e A scot ov al this season. P oi nt l eader Sammy Tanner had hi s worst night of t he year as he was def eated in th e heat race by Dr aayer in a bar-to-bar ride t he entire fi ve l aps with cl assy Chri s t he wi nner by l ess than a half a l ength . Sammy was out of the trophy dash and i n t he semi -main eve nt where he coul d pull no b e t t e r t han fi fth against a field of main event riders, any where but A scot. Fifth place was the final t rans fer to t he expert final. Tanner work ed hi s way up earl y in th e feature but was passed and re-passed again and again by first Di ck Hammer and final ly Mert Lawwill . Sammy fi nished a distant fourth. the farthest back th is year. The Gary Bray racing te am of White and Haaby gave th e fans a show i n t he Trophy Da sh and rode side by si de from start to finish with Whit e winning his second trophy of the ye ar. E llio t t Sc hul t z came out o f retirement on c e a ga in but c o ul d only pull a fourth plac e i n hi s hea t rac e behind White, Ge ne Romero and Pat Gosc h . He did not t ra ns fe r to th e se mi . He c a rries #20 r this yea r. Harris Takes Amateur Amateur action again foun d another new face in th e winner ' s ci rcle at the end of t he ten-lap final. This week it was Tim Harris who had to wi n the semi and th en come from the back row i n th e final t o ta ke t he le ad with l ess than t hree laps t o go. F our dif f erent riders l ed the event bef ore Harris wrapped it up. L arry Pruet t, t he novice t hat eve ry body has been wai ting t o catch f i re . did j ust th at this tim e out. Pruet t scor ed t hree wins i n an easy fashion and won th e heat, t rophy dash and final l eading all th ree wi re to wire.
