T hree sizes of bikes are used (50cc , IOOcc, 250cc) , and a man may ride in all three classes if he want s to. It' s quite a sight sometimes to see a ri der finis h a 50cc heat and meet his pi t crew at the gate , j ump f rom one machine to another and dash out for t he line-up of his 100cc heat, finish that one and have only a few minutes to clean his goggl es, gra b a quick smoke to soothe his nerv es and rush his 250cc rac er to the line for that heat. When it was over I talked with Wes Cooley, president of the A .C .A .. and he seemed very happy with the conditi on of the track. The riders wer e pl eased as well and seem anxious to start the weekly meets which will run ev ery Thursday until the end of November . ' Spectat ors are well tak en care of here, with a well-run snack bar and clean, modern restrooms. All in all, i t would be hard t o find a better way to spend the buck-and-a-half that is charged for admission. Directions to South Gate Raceway T o reach the track by fr eeway , make your way to the Long Beach Freeway and tak e Firestone east t o Garfi e Id (fi rst signal), then south on Garfield to Southern (one block) and west t o th e tra ck . The track is one block south of Firestone and ' one block west of Garfield.
