Lin Kuchler, AMA Executive Secretary To Join NASCAR On July lsi , • . .. • Daytona Beach-May 17, 1966-L. A. "Lin" Kuchler, Executive Secretary of the American Motorcycle Associa tion and the Motorcycle, Scooter and Allied Trades Association, has been named Executive Manager of the N ational Associati on For Sto ck Car AUlO R acing (NASCAR). The announcement was made on Ma y 17 in Da ytona Beach , Florida, by NASCAR President Bill France wh o ca lled Kuchler " one of the most able men in motor sports." " W e are indeed fortunate," France said, " to secure the services of a man with the experience and knowledge of Lin Ku chler, a man who has devoted his life to motor spons competition. U nde r Lin's leadership, the spon of motorcycle racing has grown tremendously in the number of members , contestants, events and in prestige." Ku ch ler will assume his new duties on July I. The position of NASCAR Executive Manager was left vacant with the death in April of Pat Purcelle, a pioneer in au tomobile racing who served in this capacity with NAS CAR for 14 years. Kuchl er, a native of M ilwa u kee who now lives in Col umbu s, O hio, h as bee n associated wi th motorcycle raci ng for more than 30 years . T he AMA organizes and prov ides guidance for the activities of more than 1500 dubs with total membership in excess of 80,000. The AMA sanctions approximately 4,000 Amateur and Professional motorcycle events each year. "I leave the AMA," Ku chler said,. "with some regret after 30 years in the motorcycle business. On the o ther hand I am looking forward to joining NASCAR. I am go ing from the largest motorcycle associatio n in the world to the largest automobile racing association in the world. Kuchler, a graduate of Milwaukee West Division High School, studied business administration at the University of Miami. He served as a bombardier for 2Y2 years during World War II. Before joining the AMA in 1955, he was a H arl eyDavidson dealer in Ann Arbor, Mich. As NASCAR executive manager Kuchler will serve in the dual role as Director of Competition, scheduling events and sanctioning tracks. The AMA has not named a successor to Kuchler but hopes to do so in the near future. "A lthough we are na turally sorry to lose Lin Kuchler," William E. Kennedy, President of the AMA said, " I am sure I spe ak for everyone connected with motorcycli ng when I say th at we wish him every success in his new assignmen t. I only got fort y dollars. Mark went t o the stock car races with Gene and I went to the races wi th Ji m and Billy. A fte r the races we went to a rest aurant and Ji mmy bought all of us Kuchl er and h is wife, Lorry, have th ree ch ild ren, Lorelyn, Judy and Lin. We got home about 12:30 , Mark staggered in about 2: 00. lIIay 4, 1963 - Satu rday GRAN DM A Mark went t o th e shop, or both of us did. Mark was a half-hour late. We ran out of gas about a bl ock from a gas station. W pushed it the rest of the way . e Abo ut 3:00 Mar k got t o work on his bike. I finished setting up a Honda beca us e there was nothing el se to do. Gene fini shed putting tog et her a Honda fifty which he is going t o l et Mark rac e tomorrow. Six o'clock rolled by and Mark and Gene weren' t fi ni shed with t he bi kes. Gene had a dat e so he had to close up th e shop and finish tomorrow morning. Mark and I went to Jim's house. By the way I guess it isn't really Jim's house, it is his moth er 's . She has lived here for forty years . She is one of the ni cest la di es I have ever kn own. She is pretty ol d but has a real kind disposition and a great sens e of humor. Mar k and I have said that if we were ri ch we would buy her anything she wanted .
