Mert is not married, and his first national win came last year - he was 1965 20-mile dirt track champ. taking the title in sacramento. He lists sports as his other interest, with football in particular. We were very impressed with Mert when we met him. We found him to be most likeable and easy to talk witb. Tbe week before the interview , he swept tbe field at Ascot , taking first place in bis heat race. the trophy dasb and the expert main! We believe that Mert has a definite goal in mind, so keep watching him-we' re sure he will attain that goal. Voice of Cal. Let's Hear Both Sides Mert Lawwill, #18 By J ack Byrd This week I want you to meet a rider who is unique among the riders. First of all, he commutes each week to Gardena from San Francisco. and second, he depends on his racing abilities for his livelihood. Of course , I am speaking of National Ha. Mert Lawwill . Mer! was born and raised in Idaho, but has been in California since 1962. He has been actively engaged in the business of racing for five years. Mer! is a great all-a round competitorhe rides TT's and road races as well as nattrack events . When he is on the track. he is all business. He has a definite look of determination in his eye. When the nag is dropped at the start of a race, you'll nearly always fin d him at the head Ever since the new AMA ruli ng stating that professional Amateur and Expert riders cannot ride sportsman events , there have been many bi tt er things said against the new ruling, includi ng last week's very biased article by Maureen Lee. It is only fair that both sides of the story be heard. There are some very good reasons behind the rule change which haven't been brought to the attention of the professional riders and these scrambling editors. The man who can best explain the reasons behind the rule change is M.R.I. Prestdent Neil Keen. I suggest you interview Mr. Keen and let both sides be heard. I'm sure Mr. Keen will cooperate with you completely. PHIL TODD Oxnard. Calif. I do not want to take anything away from the Experts for the ride and show they put on. I know they had nothing to do with the filming . But I think the Wide Wo rld of Sports should have shown more. What happened to the Amateurs and lightweights? I'm sure that all who rode the TT (I also rode) were disappoi nted when all they showed was t he 500cc a nd Open E xpe rts . I think they could at least put more on film for one hour. The same thing hap pened when they were at P erris in ' 63. TO NY BUGARIN Los Angeles . Calif. NATI ONAL OBSE RVER DIGS US Progress in Public Relations Re c e nt l y C ycle News had the pleasure of entertaining Mr. J i m B ryan t , a re po rt er from the National O bs erver ne wspaper which is p ublished wee kly by Do w Jones , Inc . , the same fi rm that publishes the Wall St re e t J ou rn a l da ily . As a guest on one of o ur f req uent fun rides . Mr . Bryant accompanied Cycle News and others to Ense nada , B.C . via motorcycles. His report of the experience , and his accompanying survey of the 2-wheel p he nomeno n in America makes good reading in this week 's National Observer, dated Monday. May 23 . 1966. But don't try to fi nd a copy fo r sale in Long Beach. We bought ' e m all. P. R. Suggestions E ver yone is doing a lot of talking abo ut imp roving the public image of motorcyclists . but talk is about as far as anyone gets . i ncludi ng myself. However. I have a s uggestion that, with your he lp, ma y produce some favora ble results. The trend nowdays seems to be to have a movie or television star speak a message or commercial a person wants • .. to get across to the public , and this method seems to work . So why can't we do the same thing? T her e a re many motorcyclists in the entertainment medi um. Keenan Wynn, Lee Marvin , Steve McQueen . Ken Os mond , J e rry Van Dy ke, just to name a fe w. Why couldn't we get some of these stars and some of the ot her riders on some sort of a TV program . possibly an int er vi ew type of show or pe rhaps we co ul d eve n s wing a special of some kin d? T he one-percenters did awhile ba ck, but , of co urse, they bad a sponsor. I know the rid ers woul d gladly donate thei r time a nd may be some of t he stars would also. As fa r a s the cost of the program , yo u co uld ask t hroug h your paper fo r contributi ons from rid e rs for this purpose . maybe t he R. R.C . could set up a ride to raise funds , and maybe even s ome of the clubs co uld donate a little out of th e very small , if any. profits they make on thei r runs . Le t these club members and other road ride rs appear on the show wearing their uniforms so tbe public can see how some of the other 99% dr ess . This would look great on color TV . If possible , show some of the moto rcycles and the equipment. (such as safety equipment) that they carry. At least show pictures. Maybe even film clips of some of tbe runs and even some police officers could help ve rify that we are not a ll bad. JOHN A. LINDSTROM Montclair. Calif. E DITOR - The id ea ha s merit.
