Winter drew the curtain on Southern
California's short track speed-sliding at
South Cate Raceway last Friday nigh t,
bu t not before young Keith Mashburn of
Santa Susana peeled off three more trophy
wins and Ivan Oden copped the 250cc
"big bike" main .
Chief of the 50cc class on a poten t littl e
Honda. and champion of the l OOcc bikes
on a thumping C ilera, Mashbu rn diced for
a lap in close traffic, then surged out to
win his races.
Riding a Honda owned by Slim List and
tuned by Jim Matson, Oden took advantage of a hasty start in the final an d
cleverly eluded the snarling Montesas of
John Baham and Swede Savage who were
unable to catch him in the shortened, B-lap
main. A I:JUff policeman stood to make
sure the noisy show finished by bedtime
and promoter Wes Cooley complied by
shortening the finals a few laps each.
The performance of all the competitors
deserve individual praise, but since space
is limited let us lavish glory on the victors
only, except to note that our pick to win,
De\Vayne Keeter, encountered a streak of
racing luck when the carburetors of both
his machines went out of order at once.
Still hopefully leather-clad, DeWayne sat
glum beside Montesa distributor Kim Kim.
