"I ran my own race," Mees said. "I
looked back, I don't know, with maybe
six or seven laps to go, and I had a
pretty good lead. Fighting back and
winning in a race like this is just mentally
good on the team. I'm not saying we
want to do this every race, but there
were people walking up and saying,
'Dude, you were out to lunch yesterday.'
I was like come on; I wasn't like out to

The high-banked little D-shaped
oval turned slick and technical. Kenny
Coolbeth (Nila Racing/Columbia Avion-
ics Indian Scout FTR750) was one of
the few that was able maintain his good
results from day one and had the first
pick of starting positions for the 25-lap
AFT Twins main event, but it didn't gain
him the advantage he was looking for.
Coolbeth had opted to start on the bot-
tom, with Mees just to his right.
Everyone knew a good start was
required and it was Mees that accom-
plished the feat. "I finally had a good
starting position. In the heat race, I had
a crappy position and I just spun off the
line," said Mees. "In the semi, the same
thing. In the main event, I was finally
