Kenny Fro st earned a third overall on his stock RM Suzu ki. ' Mike McGowen, another rider from House of Honda, pulled off second overall on his Husky. The 125 Exper t class , always the hotshoes to wa tch, saw Billy Urban back on the trac k for the fITSt time in nearl y a year. It didn 't look like Billy has forgotten wha t he knew when he was number one, but he j ust co uldn 't stay up with J. San tich and Denis Curtis. Andy Baines, one of the best Open class riders around was do ing. some fast moving on a new Honda, bu t just couldn't get it together soon enough and fin ished fourth overall. Running the 125 Amateurs with the Pro s mu st have encourage d the guys as Corki Moore , on a Miller Mano Suzuki, blast ed th e Amateur class and finished th ird overa ll with the Experts. Hot on Moore's tail was Honda mounted J. Holt, who is always in the top three finishers, Ron Lafranchi, doing a sup er job, finished third ove rall on his Lucky Yamaha. J ack Smith on a Bul borrowed from Gary Smith bounced by Wine to take over th e lead . J ack continued to st retch it out while three rid ers battled behind for second. This was Jack 's first race on a 25 0, but you couldn't tell it by th e way he rode, Ed Wine, Paul Nicholson 'an d David Callaway were wheel to wheel, right up to the final flag. Callaway, on his Kaw, maneuvered his way around Wine and followed in Smith's dust to finis h second. Nicholson too beat Wine out for third, bu t all fou r riders received trophies for their fine efforts. A big combination class of 100·1 25 Beginner/Novices were run together. Beginner Allan Ronska led the Novices the whole way and reall y showed them how to handle a 125 Yamaha. Jay Bales started out in second but Robert Bums made short work of his spot. Kirk Johnson got by Jay also and slipped into third. The only Beginner out of the whole bunch, ' Ronska, was the gold holder. The Mini Experts were rea!ly hot, and it was Bobby Garabedian who lit the match and smoked them all. Chip will be riding the 1Il .., series with a win By James Brammer SAN DIEGO, CAL. ,JUNE 3 Marty Tripes (DG Yam) captured th e fe atured ' 250 Pro class as South Bay opened its summer series of motocross Wednesday night. ' David Metje (Yam), winner of the 500 Junior class , needed only a fourth place finish in his second race after winning the firs t go. In his second race, he was fifth on the first lap , fourth on th e second. and th en charged on to first again in .the final laps , narrowl y leading Dave Peters at th e finish. Winner (1·1) of th e 125 Junior class . Hugh Good (Ilon). had close finishes with different runnerups in both of his motos, Good and Don -Brown were previously the chief sco rers in winning th e High School Championship for · Helix High of La Mesa. They are backed with an organized team with titles - pit boss. manager and others. Marty Tripes' feature win didn't appear easy. Mike Stearns (Suz) led the first race start to finish while Tripes' came up from fifth to ' fass Mike McGowen. Hoffman (Yam at least twice for third, and finally Jim Martin to finish second to Steams. Steams led again from the start in the second race but overcooked a tum on the first lap and was far behind when he recovered. Tripes led from then on to win (2·1). • Results in Results Section. Old Timers.warm up the Dunes By Dal Calais VALENCIA, CAL., JUNE 6 ' Practice on the ' tricky well- prepared CRC course really woke the old guys up as the Shadow Glen area was full of many who played 'Laurel and Hardy trying to dial in the "now fast-now tigh t" course. Getting right down to it in moto one, Blackie Lewis and his new Maico made it look stylish and easy on their way to first overall in the Master class. Chuck Strauss.
