VOL. 53 ISSUE 40 OCTOBER 11, 2016 P35 six-mile course, which included the Wythe Raceway Mile. The start was very "Daytona-ish" with a mile of switchbacks and long-banked turns. Most of the starts went off without a glitch. After the oval track, the racers were treated to some Enduro X and then off into the woods they went. After the first lap it was local favorite, Supermini 14-15 rider Justin Mutter leading, with Jeff Macknik Jr. in second about 30 seconds back. Third place was Hunter Thorne. Mutter led it all the way to the checkers, while Macknik and Supermini 12-13 racer Thorne battled for second. In the end, Thorne won out after the adjust- ed times were tallied. The "C" riders ran an almost identical six-mile loop. After the first lap, it was morning Super- mini racer Macknik, now on a full-size bike in the C 200 class, leading the way. Macknik was pursued by Derek Mabe, also from the C 200 line. The two went back and forth for all three laps, while Ryan Long, from the Vet C class, was sneaking up on them on adjusted time. On the final lap, it was Long with the overall win, Mabe in second and Macknik in third. The main event had a 1.5-mile addition with some extraordinary hillclimbs and downhills that the promoter felt would have been a tad too much for the previous races given the slick conditions. Nine AAs riders were doing battle for both VCHSS points PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTOPER BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY.COM Ethan Ficklin leads the AA class off the start. and AMA East points. No throw- aways for the AA's means every round counts. Right after the green flag waved it was an extremely tight race. By the time they got to the Enduro X section, the top five were separated by only the width of the track. They were bar-to- bar, three-to-four wide. After the first lap, it was a freight train with local favorite Paddy Holloway in the lead. Rounding out the top five was McDonal. On lap two, there was a wicked pile-up involving the front-runners. At this point, it turned into a race of who could get up and re-started the quick- est. It was, as it turned out, McDonal. He took the lead from then on, and by the fourth lap, he had a 30-second lead on Brandon Nero and Ethan Fickland. Keeping them honest in fourth was Holloway. Nero, Fickland and Holloway engaged in a three-way dogfight for the runner-up position, a battle that McDonal wanted no part of and maintained a healthy lead, which he succeeded in doing. Nero held on to second place, while Holloway got around and edged out Fickland for runner-up honors. Kenneth Held OVERALL 1. Kyle McDonal (Bet) 2. Brandon Nero (Yam) 3. Paddy Holloway (KTM) 4.
