he final round of the 2016
AMA East Hare Scrambles
Series played out in Rural Re-
treat, Virginia, October 9, with
the VCHSS Rattlesnake Hare
Scrambles at Wythe County
Raceway. Kyle McDonal only
needed to finish second to wrap
up the East title, and he did a
little better than that by winning
the race, and with it, securing
the number-one plate, joining
recently crowned AMA West
Hare Scrambles Champion Nick
Burson as the two top National
Hare Scrambles riders in the
nation.
Not only was the East Cham-
pionship on many people's
minds but so was an unpredict-
able Hurricane Matthew, which
was unleashing its fury just 100
miles to the west.
Race promoter Peery Browne
brought in 50 truckloads of
mulch in preparation for even
more rain and graded it into the
open areas of the track. Sunday
morning, however, at first light,
the sun was out and the air was
dry. It didn't quite dry up the two
previous days of rain, but it was
much better than anyone could
have hoped for.
First up were the Youth
classes. They were treated to a
