Although it hasn't exactly been
the norm in recent years for
Ryan Dungey to be the fastest
guy this early in a champion-
ship, it's rarely considered to be
a surprise when the defending
champion wins a race. However,
when the closest challenger to
that champion in that race is
rapidly approaching 34 years of
age, on a new bike, and on a
new team announced less than a
week prior to the series opener,
that's pretty surprising.

Chaparral Yamaha's Chad Reed
has historically always loved
racing in San Diego—although
until last year it was always at
Qualcomm Stadium rather than
Petco Park—but after finishing
sixth at Anaheim 1 and qualifying
outside the top 10 at San Diego
1, it's safe to say that not many
people figured he'd be a con-
tender at the front of the pack.
