my last race it didn't feel right rid-
ing over my head."
At the start of the race, Lafferty
looked very much like he might
go out with a win.
"I didn't put a whole lot of em-
phasis on this race, as far as rac-
ing strategy, and it seemed like it
paid off," said Lafferty. "I rode the
first test pretty well, it turned out
I won it, which gave me a mental
boost and I just kept going with it.
"The last three tests it seemed
like I fell off a bit. I struggled in
the fourth test by stalling the bike
and missing some turns, and
then in the last test I pushed re-
ally hard, and I ended up falling
on the road, and that kind of took
me out of it. I don't think this is a
place you can really push hard.
I rode conservative in the begin-
ning and I was winning tests, and
then in the end I was pushing and
I ended up blowing turns."
Lafferty finished off the day
in the runner-up slot, leaving his
final tally at 71 national wins and
eight national titles.
"I'm sure at some point I'll look
back at all of this and be amazed,"
said Lafferty. "Right now, though,
I'm just going to enjoy the mo-
ment."
Finishing just off the podium
in fourth was Grant Baylor. The
KTM support rider won the pre-
vious round two weeks ago in
South Carolina, and he came into
the Indiana race hoping to back
