The German rookie was able to claw his way into second, though, where he latched onto Dungey and applied pressure for a majority of the race. "There were a few areas I could hear him [Roczen] come up on me," said Dungey. "You kind of adjust to that and I'd switch my lines. I actually tried quite a bit of different stuff being out there in the lead, which is unlike me to do." In the second moto, both Dungey and Roczen were forced to fight their way from starts out- side the top five. Dungey seemed to respond with a sense of urgen- cy as he made a hard charge to- ward the front with an incredible pass on his teammate and a few others on the opening lap. "By the time the first lap went Briefly... in his pro debut after overcoming a first-turn crash that held him back to almost last in moto one. A lot of hype surrounded AMA Ho- rizon Award winner RJ Hampshire as he entered the pro ranks on the GEICO Honda team. After an up- and-down day for the top-five hope- ful, Hampshire ultimately finished- 13th overall after logging 11-16 moto scores. "I went down a couple times and ended up 11 th ," he said. "The sec- ond moto was even better. I was up to fifth or sixth early, but I tucked the front end and dropped back to 15th. I raced back up to 11th or so and then had a pretty big crash and ended up back in 16th. It's good to get the jit- ters out." Following a 7-9 performance for eighth overall in his home state, Phil Nicoletti talked about Unadilla being the final stop in his part-time gig with the Toyota/JGRMX/Yamaha team. The New York-native said, "It was cool that they let me go out for open- ing ceremonies in front of the home- town crowd," he said. "It was unreal. It's good to see everyone cheer and see all the faces on the sidelines that I grew up with. The second moto I had an awesome start again, was second or third, and I just mentally and physically blew up after the half- way mark. This was my last one but I'm grateful the team let me do this weekend and see all the hometown crew so it's good." There was a post-race drug test ad- ministered for the top three overall in each class and many riders spent a good amount of time dealing with the process, but it seems like they are continued on next page
