LUCAS OIL AMA PRO MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP
ROUND 6/JULY 5, 2014
REDBUD TRACK 'N' TRAIL/BUCHANAN, MICHIGAN
P52
through the pack and win after a
brilliant run to the front in the first
moto.
In the second moto, Roczen
grabbed his first holeshot of the
season but came under tremen-
dous pressure by Canard, as the
two riders battled back and forth
for the lead. It was one of the
best battles of the year and it ul-
timately ended with Roczen tak-
ing control of the race and pulling
away.
"I got off to a good start and
I thought, 'yes, I got the hole-
shot,' so I was happy with that,"
said Roczen. "Every time I come
back from the sighting lap and
see some good lines I think I can
really break away if I can get the
holeshot. So I finally got it, but I
actually caught my foot on the in-
side a little bit and I messed up
the second corner and went a
little too wide and Trey got around
me. I was bummed when he went
by because it's never easy when
someone is throwing dirt at you
the whole race, especially with
the ruts."
Roczen passed Canard back
for the lead, only to give it up
again after LaRocco's Leap.
"I checked out the inside run
before the Leap on the sight lap
and it looked really good, but I
didn't know if I could make the
jump from the inside, so I kept
on taking the outside. So after I
passed him, I knew it was a little
bit of a gamble, but I went outside
in that turn. He could have gone
for it inside and not even jump it
and he would have passed me
back, so I ended up behind him
again and struggled a little bit to
get by him."
After Canard's second pass,
Roczen made several attempts
to get Canard back and did so
on a couple different occasions,
only to have Canard fight back
and reclaim the lead. On lap five,
however, Roczen finally made a
pass stick and was able to pull
away for the win.
In the end, Roczen extended
his lead in the title chase to 26
points over Dungey, and after-
wards he attributed his latest vic-
tory to conditioning.
"I had my work cut out for me
in the first moto, but I just never
let up," said Roczen. "This was
one of those days where my fit-
ness played a factor and I wasn't
going to let it slip away."
Jeremy Martin returned to his
winning ways in the 250 class.
