AIRES AMA NATC MOTOTRIALS US NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
VOL. 51 ISSUE 26 JULY 1, 2014 P103
Smage dropped 12 on lap one,
while Matejicek completed the
lap with a total of 17 points.
Webb made it all the way to
section 11 on the second lap be-
fore the rain hit, and he was able
to finish the lap with only five
points, a considerable improve-
ment over lap one.
Smage, on the other hand,
dropped 20 points for lap two,
his fives in sections four and
eight not helping his cause.
Matejicek closed in on Smage
with an 18-point second lap, and
was just three points behind the
Sherco rider heading into the fi-
nal lap.
With the sections now full-on
mud, Webb was able to get to the
finish with an 18-point card, leav-
ing him with a total of 27 points
for the day and his second win of
the weekend.
Smage was able to hold off
Matejicek to claim second overall
after taking 21 points on the final
lap, and 68 for the day after "late"
penalty points were factored in.
Matejicek finished third with 25
for the final lap and 60 for the day
with penalty, beating out fourth-
place finisher Bryan Roper by 27
points.
"I saw on the radar that it was
going to rain again so we tried to
go as fast as we could before it
hit so I could ride as many sec-
tions as I could before they got
nasty," said Webb. "I had a lot of
fun today and I think it showed in
my riding. Yesterday was a little
stressful, but it was an incredible
weekend."
Smage polished off his sev-
enth National MotoTrials title with
a total of 205 points, and is sec-
ond in all-time titles behind Geoff
Aaron, who has 10. Interestingly,
Smage's minder, Ryan Young, is
third on the list with six national
titles.
Second overall for the year
(Left) Cody Webb surprised the
trials crowd by taking a pair of wins
over seven-time champ Pat Smage.
(Below) Martin Matejicek capped
off his American debut with a

series standings.
