and none — of making the po-
dium after his first-moto seventh.
While dicing over fourth and fifth
with Yoshimura Suzuki's James
Stewart in the first moto with less
than half the race to go, the two
riders tangled, dropping Canard
to 11
th
and Stewart to 10
th
. But
they both pushed on and got a
little help when two riders ahead
of them — Justin Barcia and An-
drew Short — both dropped out
with mechanical issues. Canard
climbed back to seventh and
Stewart sixth.
Canard came back hot and
heavy in the second moto, put-
ting his Honda into fourth right off
the start. He made a pass on his
teammate Barcia shortly there-
after but could never latch on to
the two KTMs ahead of him that
had already gotten away. His 7-3,
however, was enough to get him
on the podium at the end of the
day.
"The first moto kind of start-
ed rough, but I started making
ground," Canard said. "Made
some passes, got around Stew
[James Stewart], then there was
a lapper right in front of me and
had to slow down. I guess James
wasn't expecting me to slow
down that much and we collided.
His front wheel got stuck in my
rear tire. I had to try and start the
bike in gear but that didn't work.
I got going again in 12
th
. I was
thinking while I was kicking the
bike that every point counts, so I
just tried to make up ground.
"The second moto I was kind
of in no-mans land the whole way
in third," he said. "Those guys
were steadily pushing away.
"Overall, we look at the day
and feel that we could be better,
but we know what to do now."
GRANT COMES ALIVE
Josh Grant started off the outdoor
season off with a somewhat sur-
prising win in the first 450 moto.
While most of the preseason talk
centered on names like Dungey,
Stewart, Roczen, Barcia and
Reed, it was the name Grant on
the back of the jersey that every-
one was chasing in moto one,
Roczen tries to hold off Dungey late
in the second 450 moto.
