a 16-year-old, nearly stealing the
overall win from the second start-
ing row. Combined with a flurry
of lead changes all day in XC1,
the mud had helped create one
of the most exciting GNCC races
in awhile.
During the 10 a.m. amateur
race, the GNCC course marshals
made the decision to shorten the
normally three-hour 1 p.m. Pro
race down to approximately two
hours. They wouldn't call the race
before the two-hour mark, but
pushing all the way to three in the
treacherous conditions wouldn't
be possible. Parts of the 11-mile
course were immersed with wa-
ter, so the course was shortened
to nine miles. When Russell
came around to get the checkers
after five laps, the clock read two
hours and 17 minutes, which is
just short of a typical GNCC.
Russell started off at the back
of the pack after having trouble
firing his bike on the start. Know-
ing what kind of track conditions
were in store, Russell and his
Factory FMF/KTM team spent a
little extra time prepping the KTM
350 XC-F. Russell commented
