"You know, I put myself into
these positions where I have to
win and I just have to dig deep
and keep plugging away to get
that points lead," Russell said.
The remedy in off-road racing
is rain and mud, which opens
the door for others to create
their own bad luck. While Russell
might not prefer to race in mud,
he knew it would present his best
chance to make up ground in the
series.
"Last night I was hoping it
would hit us hard with the rain be-
cause I was looking forward to a
mud race," he said.
And a mud race is exactly what
Russell got, and then he did his
part by riding well and taking the
win. While the difficult conditions
did help Russell gain points on his
main championship competitors,
it also nearly opened the door for
an all-time upset, with XC2 Pro
Lites (250cc) rider Grant Baylor,
