He ran second for a while until taking over the point when leader Gary Sutherlin pitted for fuel. Bell's run at the front, however, wouldn't last long. "I wasn't even in a technical section, but in a high-speed flowing section when I was cutting outside to the inside," Bell said. "The back end stayed in an outside section and the front end wanted to be on an inside rut, and I just lost the front end. I went down and tweaked my thumb a little bit, so that was hurting when I got back going." The mishap cost Bell the lead, which went back to Sutherlin. But Bell's problems weren't over yet. With a couple of laps left, a bee got caught in Bell's jersey and it deposited its stinger in the back of Bell's neck. The sting left Bell with a severe reaction and it was all he could do to make it to the checkered flag, at which time he made a beeline for a dose of Benadryl.
