AUGUST 23, 2006 • C Y C L E N E W S 62 BY JIM P. SANDERSON CLIFFORD, PA, JULY 22 A merican Classic Racing, a member-owned organization dedicated to the sports of Vintage motocross and off-road racing, made its annual trek to the Hurricane Hills Sports Center in Clifford, Pennsylvania. ACR the best Vintage motocross series in the Northeast. Unfortunately, Mother Nature brought rain to the area, which made practice and the first set of motos a mudfest. Eventually the rain stopped and the sun came out. The Hurricane Hills track crew did their magic during intermission, and track conditions improved tremendously. Joe Fontana led the start of the combined gate of ACR GP 250cc and ACR GP Open classes, with former National number 63, Dave McLean, in pursuit. Joe Buckley, Robert Clare and Eric Zackrone completed the top five. Fontana and McLean were in a class all their own, and they left the rest of the pack behind. McLean got close enough to attempt a pass on Fontana in the big sweeper by the start, but he couldn't get by. Buckley and Clare were a solid third and fourth. John Plaza moved up to fifth. By lap three, Fontana was pulling away from McLean and had built an eight-second advantage. On the following lap, Fontana increased his lead to 13 seconds. Fontana crossed the finish line for the win with a 17-second cushion. McLean, Buckley, Clare and Plaza rounded out the top five. Fontana, Zackrone, McLean, Clare and Anthony Dimarzio led the charge out of the first turn in the final moto. Fontana held the point. McLean and Clare moved up to claim second and third, displacing Zackrone to fourth. Buckley moved up to fifth. Fontana had a four-second lead at the start of lap two. Fontana went down in the corner following the new rhythm section just before the start of lap four. McLean inherited the lead and pulled away to a nine-second lead before Fontana was able to remount. Meanwhile, Clare also had some misfortune and pulled off. Buckley, Zackrone and Plaza inherited third through fifth. Fontana went down again, in the exact same corner as on the previous lap, and that mistake allowed McLean to increase his advantage to 30 seconds at the checkers. Fontana, Zackrone, Buckley and Plaza completed the top five. Andy Mikolaichik, Ken Napolitano, Dan Pullen, Fontana and Zach Hamm led the start of the first combined Evolution Open Novice/ Intermediate/Expert moto. Mikolaichik quickly pulled away and started lap two with a three- second lead. Napolitano remained in second. Fontana passed Pullen for third. A few turns later, Pullen was relegated to fifth by Hamm. Mikolaichik's lead was six seconds on lap three and 11 seconds by lap four. Mikolaichik took the checkers with a whopping 16-second advantage, followed by Napolitano, Fontana, Hamm and Pullen. Mikolaichik, Fontana, Napolitano, Pullen and Hamm led the start of the final moto. Two turns before the start of lap two, Hamm passed Pullen for fourth. Mikolaichik had a seven- second lead by the third lap, and he'd increased that to 10 seconds when he took the checkers for another win. Napolitano, Fontana, Hamm and Pullen rounded out the top five. Oklahoma State Championship Series Round 8: Cooperland MX Park Nichols, Berry, Hawthorne & Co. Get 'er Done! BY CHUCK BALL STILLWATER, OK, JULY 9 T he eighth and final round of the Oklahoma State Champi- onship Series took place at the world-renowned Cooperland MX Park facility, under the watchful eyes of new owner Dale Schultz, former owner Kris Brown, and several hundred of the best racers Oklahoma has to offer. "The track is just awesome," Schultz said. "Shawn [Wright], Kris [Brown] and the guys did a great job prepping the track, and this series is one of the best there is. I can't wait for next year." In the first moto of the 65cc (9-11) class, there was a mad pack of KTMs storming through turn one, with Michael Wright leading the charge. But a few turns later, Colt Nichols took over the reins. TH Racing's Pierce Low also made a quick pass to move into second, and these three were the ones to beat. The three orange-bike riders finished the moto in that order. earned second overall. Sean Bowling used his Honda to capture the final podium step. The 125cc Beginner gate was almost full, and when it fell, it was Yamaha pilot Austin Hall winning both motos for the overall. Adolfo Obregon, on another Yamaha, used a final-moto effort to score second overall. Kawasaki sent Jordan Dooley to take the final podium position and prevent a Yamaha sweep. The 125cc C riders took to the track and kept the scorers busy. Kawasaki jockey Tyler Elliot took the overall win without a moto victory. KTM rider Dylan Howell was second overall by only one point.
