Moto two was more of the same, as Nichols, Wright and Low started in the front and made it stick until the checkers flew. Justin Berry took wins in the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes, as well as the Schoolboy and Four-Stroke classes. He also took second in the Pit Bike Open class, behind former National champ Guy Cooper. Needless to say, Berry slept well later in the evening. Riding multiple classes is never easy, but riding them all as a Vet rider can be tiring and even downright exhausting. The ever- smiling Dennis Hawthorne did just that, taking uncontested wins in the Over 25, Over 30 and Over 40 classes aboard his mighty Kawasaki 450. At day 's end, the former five-time National Arenacross champ was still smiling and bench-racing with others as he collected his trophies and helped his son Kevin load up their bikes for the drive home. Ashleigh Hall put her Kawasaki at the front in both Women's motos to sweep the class with 1-1 finishes. Qualifying for Loretta's earlier in the year, Hall has been steadily picking up her speed as she prepares to head east to the dude ranch this August. The weekend's big winner in the Expert class was Billings, Missouri's Jimmy Albertson. Riding mistake-free and getting good starts paid off for "Albee," as he took four of four moto wins over the likes of local fast guys Robbie Smith, Cory Green and Zach Blackwell. The Oklahoma State Championship Series has once again proved to be one of the most competitive and most well-liked series in the mid-South. EVENTS C Y C L E N E W S • AUGUST 23, 2006 63 BY JOHN BETHEA SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JULY 16 T ony Blood is no stranger to winning four classes - he's achieved that relatively rare feat several times in the past. But he's never accomplished that in the finale of a major series, sweeping all eight motos - which is exactly what the 15-year-old did at the fifth and last round of the 14th annual Yamaha Dealers' Series at Glen Helen Raceway Park. With temperatures reaching triple digits, you might expect the Chaparral-sponsored Honda rider's tongue would be hanging out after he won the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate, 250cc Four- Stroke B and Schoolboy (13-16) events. But you'd be wrong. "I've been training in this heat, and it doesn't bother me at all," he said calmly, his enthusiasm not apparent even when discussing his 125cc B series championship. "We try not to follow any one series that much. I missed round two, so I don't even know where I'm at in the points." What really interests the Race Tech/Thor/Acerbis-backed rider is the upcoming Loretta Lynn's Nationals. "I'll still be riding Intermediate next year till Loretta's," he said, "before moving to Expert." That may seem a long time before making the class jump, but consider Jared Minor's Dealers Series history. The 18-year-old has raced almost exclusively at Glen Helen his whole career and came into this year's events a five-time champion: once as a Novice and four times as an Intermediate. He pulled off his sixth championship, this time as an Expert in 125cc action. "This has been the most fun," Minor says, "but now it's time to take it serious, because this is a whole new level." Minor's championship on the John Burr Cycles Honda came at the expense of another rookie Expert, Derreck Murphy, who had been the 125cc and 250cc A leader until round four, when his bike broke. "I knew I had it [the championship] when I saw smoke coming out of his [Murphy's] bike and it died right in front of me," smiled Minor. "I am very disappointed, and it was mostly due to myself," lamented Murphy, who had never won any series championship in his life. "I try to work on my own bike, but I guess I put it back together wrong and it's still not working." Left with only his 450F, the JBC Yamaha rider (who turned Pro only last March) still had a shot at the 250cc A championship - which he gladly accepted, even after finishing third on the day, as he was bested by two nonseries competitors. Kawasaki's Cale Wallace, who was "just getting some track time before Loretta's," demolished the 125cc and 250cc A classes, both via runaway wins. The Weekend Warrior Trailers rider's only stumble was a last-place start in the second 250cc moto, but when he caught Honda rider Joey Bitto in turn one on lap two, it was all over.
