C Y C L E N E W S • AUGUST 23, 2006 61 BY LARRY WOOSTER AUBURN, NY, JULY 23 T he Scott USA/Acerbis Northeast Gold Cup Championship Series, presented by KSA Racing, stormed into Frozen Ocean Moto-X Park for its fourth of five rounds, with additional race-day support from Thunder Alley Sports and Monster Energy Drink. This was also the sixth Race Tools WNYMA Summer Series race. Racers came ready to try to earn a share of the more than $40,000 in NEGCCS prizes up for grabs. Twenty-eight 125cc Novices twisted the throttles wide when the gate dropped for moto one. Tiz Cousineau made the haul from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, pay off by ripping the holeshot over Nathan Devinney, Myles Caradori and the rolling thunder of 25 riders in pursuit. There were seven lines in every c o r n e r, j u s t a s W N Y M A a n n o u n c e r extraordinaire Thomas "Yak" Threadgill had promised, so when Cousineau and Devinney plugged two of them racing into the second corner, the whole deck was reshuffled. Jimmy Phalen, K-100 Fuel Treatment's Matt Fragale, and Michael Hanczyk looked like the early leaders until Caradori aired it out over the big 10,000-gallon tabletop and snatched the lead. Caradori was now out front. Geoff Hubbard picked his way into second, and Brad Bourne, Tyler Burhans, Dan Pilon, MotoOption.com's Ryan Musclow, and Thomas Dennis all looked like top-five contenders. By midmoto, Caradori still ruled court, with a six-second lead over Hubbard, but Pilon was closing fast and still had an outside shot at the win. With two laps to go, Pilon was past Hubbard and gunning for Caradori, which brought everyone to their feet, cheering. At the white flag, Caradori's lead had been slashed to three seconds. Pilon was definitely going for the win. When the checkered flag fell, though, Caradori held on for the big win by half a bikelength over Pilon. Robert O'Leary, Brandon Nagel and Hubbard filled out the top five. Moto two exploded off the Race Tools start l i n e w i t h a n o t h e r C a n a d i a n r i p p i n g u p maximum terra firma for the holeshot, as Freelton, Ontario, Canada's Nagel broke free of O'Leary, Pilon and Dennis, and the yard sale t h a t b r o k e o u t b e h i n d t h e m . N a g e l , a motocross thoroughbred, was checking out on Pilon, O'Leary, Phalen, Fragale, Kyle Brassie a n d A n d r e w M e e d e r. Moto - o n e w i n n e r Caradori finally surfaced in ninth place. By lap three, Caradori was in fifth and charging like a well-balanced bull, but still trailing Nagel, O'Leary, Phalen and Pilon. Nagel got cross-rutted cornering and stalled his Monster Energy Kawasaki, allowing O'Leary by before he could refire; he resumed the race in second. That bobble helped Caradori close the gap even further. But then came the turning point, as Pilon powered his way into the lead when O'Leary stuffed it in a deep groove, catching Nagel, and Caradori pulled the trigger and landed in second place with half a lap to go. Everything added up for Caledon, Ontario, Canada's Pilon (2-1) to take first overall, over a very hard-charging Caradori (1-2). Nagel (4-4) completed the podium. Caradori is poised to collect more than $1,500 in NEGCCS product awards from the world's greatest sponsors - Scott USA, Acerbis, KSA Racing, Thunder Alley Sports, Dunlop Tires, K-100 Fuel Treatment, Fox Racing, Sick Racing, Race Tools, MSR, Answer Racing, PowerMadd, DP Brakes, No Toil, Applied Racing, Pro Wheel, Twin Air, FMF, Factory 909, Fly Racing, and more - if his luck can hold out at the final NEGCCS race. The second 125cc Open moto had more action, as the track began to get faster. This time, Scanlan and Heintze ran off and hid from the rest of the class, while Pizzuto crashed and was unable to restart his bike. Phillips won the Schoolboy class. Damon Arceneaux, fresh off his Top Dog victory last month, carried his momentum into the first 85cc (12-15) moto. Nate Martin led Houston Gammons, Brandon Pickell and Andrew Rigby. Arceneaux opened up a two- straightaway lead on the first lap and went on to take a clear win on his D&G/JM-sponsored Yamaha. Heavy D, the finish-line flagger, summed up Arceneaux's effort with a comment to the scorekeepers: "Damon almost lapped himself!" Phillips got in front of Arceneaux early in the first 85cc Open moto. The two Yamaha riders fishtailed through the mud until Phillips went down, leaving Arceneaux a clear (but muddy) track. All he had to do was stay up - which he did, and won another moto. Phillips remounted to keep second place, while Rigby and Martin rode their KTMs into third and fourth, respectively. RESULTS 50 OIL-INJ: 1. Eston Duhe (Hon); 2. Justin Bolotte (Kaw); 3. It finally came - on race day. Track master Ivan Mancuso had the track cut deep and moist, but the rain caught everyone by surprise, soaking the track down to the bone. The race was post- poned one day as several dozen loads of sand were spread; but the rain came again on Sunday's practice adding insult to injury. Many riders packed up; but for the ones who stayed, the race conditions went from ugly to tolerable through- out the race day. Before the race was over, almost every rider had gone down at least once! Two of the fastest riders on the day matched up early in the 125cc Open/Schoolboy contest - Joseph Pizzuto and Jason Scanlan. Both are local riders, both are teenagers, and both dealt with the sloppy conditions with careful aggression. Pizzuto took the lead off the gate, with Scanlan leading the chase. Jacob Heintze held third, in front of Schoolboy-class leaders Carey Smith and Skylar Phillips. Pizzuto carved his own lines through the muck on his Ascension Ready Mix Kawasaki, as Scanlon developed a strategy while following on his D&G/Racing Innovations/ Alford's Sports Kawasaki. At the back of the pack, Skylar "Superfly" Phillips, the only rider on a two- stroke, began to get his speed on his minibike. Pizzuto was the first of many riders to go down in the mud, which allowed Scanlan to take the lead. Pizzuto remounted and went after him, even jumping the big finish-line tabletop. Pizzuto closed the gap on Scanlan and was within a few seconds at the white flag, but Scanlan fended off Pizzuto's charge at the checkered flag with only one bikelength to spare. Phillips won the Schoolboy portion on his Louisiana Motocross River's Edge Motocross Track Scanlan, Superfly, and the Man Who Lapped Himself BY BILLY ATKINSON CALHOUN, GA, JULY 8 A break in the hot weather, with the temper- atures in the 80s, brought out a good crowd to Calhoun, and the racing was awe- some. The track crew had their hands full get- ting the water down, but by race time the track was ready. Grab something cold to drink and I'll meet you at the first turn!
