Hampshire said. "Right now, for
me, it's just a matter of holding
that speed longer once I get out
there. The second moto was cra

zy; there was a lot going on, and I
found myself in a lot of battles. I
kind of knew where I was points-
wise once I saw Chase crash off
the wall. But we've been working
for this, and we know this is the
level I can be at—on the podium.
Definitely had some help today,
but going forward, this is where I
expect myself to be—fighting for
podiums."
Tomac rounded out the po

dium in third overall. The former
champ, who was also named
team captain for Team USA's
Motocross of Nations effort,
grabbed two holeshots on the day
and brought the heat in the early
laps of both motos. Tomac led
the way in moto one but eventu

ally dropped off the pace—later
revealing that he wasn't feeling
100 percent on the day, having
started to feel ill the night before
the race—and crossed the line
way back in seventh but officially
was awarded sixth after the pen

alties were handed out.
Race two saw Tomac maintain
second place behind Jett Law-
rence for most of the 30-minute-
plus-two-lap moto, but a late
mistake when he stalled the bike
allowed Hunter Lawrence to take
the position. The bobble dropped
him in the overall standings but
still kept him on the podium in
third. He narrowly holds third in
the championship over teammate
Justin Cooper.
"I was just happy to get on the
podium today," Tomac admitted.
"I came into this race pretty under
the weather. Friday night, I started
coming down with it, and then to
-
day I was just kind of hanging on.
(Left) Chase Sexton
won the first 450MX
moto but crashed
spectacularly in
moto two and did not
finish. (Right) Jett
Lawrence's penalty
from race one shook
up the overall results.
He won moto two
and still finished
sixth overall.
Eli Tomac took
both holeshots and
finished third overall,
but it wasn't a great
day for him.
