Robert roosts 'em at Electric City Short Track· By Crystal Miller SCHENECTADY, NY, OCT. 4 Tom Robert, the oldest active dirt track racer in District 3, won the Senior B final with a come-from-behind victory over Joe Gould at Electric City Short Track. The 45-year-old Robert won the Over 30 class aboard his equally ancient Uncle Willies Machine Shop/ Green Island Autobody/Cycles Etc./Grizzly Bear Racing-sponsored 1979 Championframed Honda XR500. . Roben chose the outside pole after winning his heat race, but was caught sleeping at the light and got off last. Robert powered around the field and into third by the end of lap one. "This is a serious groove track, and normally the outside is all marbles, but the track crew did a great job and there was traction everywhere. I can't believe I just drove around everybody," said Robert. After getting around the second place rider, Robert set his sights on the leader who now had a straightaway lead. With two laps to go, Robert won the drag race down the back straight to claim the groove through turns three and four and held on for the win. "This is the first time I've had a checkered flag in my hand since I retired from racing 1973, what a thrill," said Robert. Chris Hart won the SportsJ!lan final after a race-long battle with Bill Newell. Newell led from the start, with Hart trying everything he could to get by. Han was unsuccessful until the last turn of the last lap, when he ducked underneath Newell and won the sprint to the checkers. Newell's 750 Triumph had its left side number plate covered with black marks from Hart's front tire. Duane Veeder looked to have the 250cc Expert race sewed up when his motor seized' with two laps to go and handed the win to Chris Hart. Veeder came back to win the Open Expert final in convincing fashion. The Open Expert race had some harrowing moments when second place finisher Bill Newkirk's steel shoe came off, but was still dangling from his boot. The steel shoe was banging and bouncing dangerously close to his chain and rear tire. While the spectators held their breath, Newkirk held his foot out and still managed to finish foerth.
