~ LOCAL EVENTS traffic and had almost caught up with the lead pack when he washed out in a corner and landed hard on his shoulder. As Dickinson took the checkered, Walker once again picked himself up and limped to the finish behind Horton and Dudley. As the riders funnelled into turn one for moto two, Dudley was once again leading the pack. Running in second was Horton, followed by Dickinson and the rest of the pack. On the second lap, while in the lead, Dudley duplicated Walker's first-moto fall, handing the lead over to Horton. Dickinson was all over the Yamaha rider, knowing he needed to get by for the overall win, and the two pulled away from the pack. Lap after lap Dickinson pecked away at Horton, who managed to hold onto the lead despite lapped traffic. Dickinson had to settle for second in the moto and second overall, while Horton got the victory. In the Vet Intermediate ranks, Charlie Strong holeshot both motos only to have Scott Curtis jump past him over the double. Strong would chase the Honda jockey down in the front section of the -course and almost pull alongside him in the back section, only to fall behind when Curtis doubled the jump on the front straight. Curtis wpn both motos, with Strong settling for runner-up. ~ Results Gary Dudley (428) and Charlie Strong (2) banged bars around the Sunrise MX track. Reggie Elliott (near lane) beat Noah Penright (far lane) for the LACR Pro Gas win. Cody Wenger (17) couldn't hold off Jimmy Owens (behind), who worked his way through the pack to claim the win in the 55cc class at Trail-Way Short Track. PIW B·I: J. ].]. Hall (Yam); 2. Deuce Kirk followed Nelson over the finish line to win the 250cc C class, with Michael Glasscock nabbing second. Track conditions were much better for the second moto. Glasscock again got the advantage as a big pile-up at the first turn slowed down some riders. Siavey followed Glassrock in second. Nelson was back a ways, but began moving up fast. By the third lap, Nelson and Siavey were side by side, but Siavey held on to score the win and the overall victory. Deuce Kirk followed on Nelson's heels to earn the win and the overall in the 250cc C class. Results 44 125 A: J. Gregory Rand (!\aw); 2. Jim Krauser (!\aw); 3. Willis Groons (KTM). . 250 Ac J. Procida ADELANTO, CA, ocr. 4 Mark Horton took advantage of his adversaries' mishaps to win the California Racing Club's Vet Expert class during their bimonthly race at Sunrise Cycle Park. In moto one the combined Expert/Intermediate start saw desert racer-turned-motocrosser Gary Dudley take the holeshot with Scotty Walker and Gene Dickinson in tow. Walker, who was in his first comeback race after a serious crash last month, railed the outside line and doubled the whoops to take the lead from Dudley. Dudley then came under pressure from Dickinson, who stuffed underneath him in a tight corner. Up front, Walker was pulling away from everyone and had encountered lapped traffic. Behind him, Dickinson and Dudley were pushing their way through the back-markers,. and Horton had moved up to join them. At around midmoto, Walker flew over a tabletop jump, got crossed up and cartwheeled his CR250. As he picked himself up, Dickinson, Dudley and Horton all passed by. Dickinson spent the remainder of the moto weaving and dodging traffic, while Horton closed in and passed Dudley when Dudley got stuck behind a lapper. Walker was busy making a charge through PALMDALE, CA, EPT.27 Clark argis dominated the National Motorcycle Racing Association's Top Sportsman eliminator at .Los Angeles County Raceway, running consistent se-ven-second times at 180 miles per hour with his 1991 turbo Kawasaki. The first round of eliminations began with John Terranova defeating Kris Wilcox. Steve Rice beat Art Engstrom, Shuru stopped Vince Testa, and Sargis got a bye for his low qualifying effon. Sargis began the semi finals with a 7.33/ 183.57 shot to stop current points leader Terranova, whose Kawasaki slowed to an 8.13/150.80. Shuru' 1992 Kawasaki advanced to the final round when he stayed ahead of Steve Rice's Kawasaki. Both bikes had problems, with Shurtz getting the win light at 9.69/144.21. The final round was anticlimactic, as Shuru • left the line before the Christmas tree was activated, handing the automatic win to Sargis. Sargis ran his slowest time of eliminations at 7.53/184.24, for his first NMRA win of the season. Roy Sears has had the honor of winning all but one of this season's rounds, and his LACR event win came at the expenxe of Kawasaki racer Kevin Enders. Sears' 1986 Suzuki ran an 8.83/151.12 (8.80 Index) to Enders' quick 8.76/153/28. Karen Stoffer increased her lead in the MRA Super Comp Series when she defeated Bill Peters in the final round with a 9.04/ 14-3.09 run. . Reggie Elliott won his first Pro Gas title of the year when he defeated Noah Penright in the final round of the 9.50 second index. Elliott's 1992 GSXR ran a final-round 9.72/ 117.51, as runner-up Penright's 1979 Kawasaki broke. In the semi finals, Elliott beat the Harley of Buzz McCoy, while Penright beat Scott Valentine. Bob Stoykovich rode his 1989 Yamaha to a 10.49/103.11 (10.22 Index) final-round victory in Super Gas, defeating Alfred Barrios. The Modified E.T. eliminator went to the 1990 Kawasaki of Jerry Taylor, as he won his third NMRA event of the year with an 11.05/ 107.08 (11.03 dial-in). Super E.T. went to the 1987 Kawasaki of Thad Wilu who logged a 10.42/116.87 (10.30 dial-in), and beat the Suzuki of Mark Chernysh. Modified Harley honors went to the 1986 Sportster of Keith Kardell, as he recorded a 12.24/118.56 run (12.17 dial-in). Steve Blake drew a .390 red light in the final. Aubrey Eten rode his 1980 Kawasaki to a win in the Trophy final, stopping Kris Wilcox in the ti tle round. Hawk flies at Trail-Way ST By Len Breech Photo by Ben Breech HANOVER, PA, ocr. 4 Rick Hawk scored his first win of the season in the 600cc A class, as Trail-Way Speedway closed down its season on a cloudy, cool Sunday afternoon. Hawk grabbed the lead right at the start, with Bob Sweeten, Gary Clark and Jack Franklin following. As they took the white flag, Sweeten slipped into the lead, but as he entered the first turn, his engine let go. In the confusion as Sweeten slowed, Clark took the lead from Hawk, but as they came off the final turn, Hawk got a better drive and nabbed the win. One of the best races of the season came in the 600cc Pro class. Harold Dorsey, Georgie Price and Kevin Varnes were all in the same heat, where they staged a position-swapping battle for six laps. At the start of the final, Dorsey put his Dorsey Builders-sponsored Rotax in front of teammate Price and Varnes while Dallas Baer took what was to be a lonely fourth place. Dorsey held down first most of the way, though Varnes did pass him briefly in the late laps. Varnes and Price battled over second just inches behind Dorsey for most of the race. Dorsey took the checkered flag a bike length in front of Varnes and Price. After practicing on a 600cc that wasn't up to snuff, Tom Ma~ee borrowed Bob Sweeten's 250cc and jumped into the lead over regular class-winner Shane Merryman, with Roy Miller, Bobby Bills, Eddie Whanon and Tom Skethway fighting for third a ways back. Magee stayed in front of Merryman. the entire way, while Miller and Whanon worked to the front of the pack. At the flag, they crossed the line side by side, with Wharton getting the nod.
