eEVENTS and was out of the race before half distance following an awkward fall in a series of small jumps. Former 125cc World MX Champion Stefan Everts of Belgium had been expected to offer a challenge, but he lacked speed throughout the night. "I have been testing my 1993 GP bike in Japan, and I only got back yesterday evening. I couldn't sleep all night and then we were hanging around all day. I finally got an hour's sleep after practice and I feel exhausted," complained Everts, who finished 10th. CN ~. Results MAIN: !. Jeremy McGrath (Hon) USA; 2. JeanMichel Bayle (Hon); 3. World Championship Supercross Series: Round 2 McGrath surprise winner in Paris By Alex Hodgkinson PARIS, FRANCE, ocr. 10 ean-Michel Bayle did what was demanded of him in the Pare des Princes, as he defeated arch rival Jeff Stanton, but the star billings of the II Supercross du Pare were both upstaged by 20-year-old Jeremy McGrath, who ran away with the main event in front of a crowd estimated around 30,000. The two-time Western R~gional 125cc Supercross Champion, who will replace Bayle on the Honda factory team for 1993, was nearly unstoppable in Paris, as he consistently made the starts in the European-style race program to win both the heat and semi-final before transferring to the main event. The only man to head McGrath all evening was Suzuki's Larry Ward, but Ward bobbled half a lap from the end of the semi after making what looked to be a winning pass two laps earlier. Ward was the only challenger to the factory Honda trio in the feature before steadily losing ground in the second half of the race to finish a lonely fourth. Recently crowned 125cc National MX Champion Jeff Emig and Tuf Racing's Ron Tichenor rounded out the top six, respectively: Seven European GP riders made it to the main event as well, but only Frederic Bolley and Yann Guedard avoided being lapped by winner McGrath. J 42 McGrath holeshot the main, but few expected him to stay in front, as Bayle started second with Stanton soon third after demoting.Kawasaki's Mike Craig. By the fifth lap, Stanton, who had immediately started to pressure Bayle, was up to second as the Frenchman lost momentum through a turn before the finish. Three-time Camel Supercross Champion Stanton immediately started to outdistance Bayle, the man who had interrupted his run of success in 1991, but he couldn't gain any ground on McGrath. In the second half of the race the leaders started to hit traffic, but the flagmen did their job well and none of the lappers interfered 'with the race. McGrath maintained his lead. Bayle came back with vengeance with five minutes remaining. An epic duel between Stanton and Bayle ~nsued, and it was finally settled three laps from the end when Stanton made a slip at the same spot where Bayle had surrendered second to him earlier. From that moment on, Stanton had to settle for third, and the partisan crowd waited to see if McGrath would fade in the closing stages of his third long race of the evening. Responding to the crowd, Bayle put everything into his charge, but it was not to be as McGrath held on to score his first-ever major supercross victory on a 250cc machine. Ward had been the fastest man during the first half of the main, as he stormed past Tichenor, Bolley and Craig to close down the Hondas, but he consistently lost ground from half distance to finish a lonely fourth. Emig, who had started three places further back, also crossed the line alone, in fourth, after escaping from a four-way battle involving Bolley, Tichenor and Guedard. Craig slipped back quickly to sixth Jay Skidmore won the Open Expert class at Lembo Lake Park. Junior rider Scott Snoop grabbed the holeshot in the main event and led Skidmore, Justin Coolbeth and brother A.J. Snoop for II laps before he went down just before the white flag as he entered turn one. Skidmore and Cool beth took advantage of the miscue and moved into the top two positions. Skidmore led throughout the last lap to score the win. In the 250cc Expert final, Scott Snoop again took the lead into the first turn, but Skidmore elbowed his way past at the midway point, and Coolbeth did the same one lap later. With two laps remaining, Coolbeth dove in hard entering turn three, pushing Skidmore off the groove and taking over the lead. Coolbeth held on until the finish for the win and Snoop finished second. James Moroney was last off the line in the 50cc Stock class, but worked his way to the front of the pack for the class win. Moroney's father Pat rode a 600cc KTM in the Open Amateur division, but didn't have quite as much success as his son. Mo~oney tried high and low lines through the turns in an effort to get by the leading Morgan Coolbeth, but couldn't make the pass and had to settle for runner-up honors. In .the Sidecar category, Mike Spear and monkey Ralph Nelson out-drove Ray Tranor and Stan Garvella. Tranor and Garvella were leading with one lap to go, but they seemed to tire, and Spear and Nelson slid underneath them and into the lead as they exited turn two. Results 50 STK: L ]. Morgan mauls Cydeland MX By Michael Rich CHICO, CA, ocr. 10 Honda-mounted Mike Morgan put in a rare appearance at Cycleland Speedway and came away with the overall win in the combined 125cc Novice/Junior class. As the gate dropped on the first moto, Novice-class rider Matt Winchester shot off the line to lead Junior Morgan and Dylan Blackwell through the first turn. Going down the back straight, Mark Cooper attempted to force his way inside Blackwell for third place. The two riders made some heavy contact, with Cooper going down hard. Winchester continued to lead until midway through the nexr.lap, when the pressure got to him. Going through the rockers, he got out of rhythm and went over the bars: This moved Morgan into first, followed closely by Blackwell. For the next several laps, Blackwell tried everything he could. to pass Morgan. In desperation, Blackwell went inside on the finish-line tabletop, came down out of shape and crashed. By this time, Cooper had worked his way through the pack, and passed the fallen rider to take over second. Blackwell remounted, but immediately unloaded in the rockers on the next lap. Morgan cruised out in front to the checkers, followed by Cooper. Winchester was able to overcome his crash and finish third overall and first in the Novice class. In the second moto, the Juniors led the Novices around the first turn. Morgan took the holeshot, followed by Cooper and Blackwell. Halfway through the first lap, Blackwell was able to out-jump Cooper over the doubles and steal second. Cooper would have none of it though, and tried to stuff under Blackwell at the end of the back straight. There was con tact between the two riders once again, and just as in the first moto, it was Cooper taking a soil sample. Blackwell continued to pressure Morgan until midrace. Blackwell attempted to double a couple of jumps that Morgan was taking as slngles, only to come up short and crash. With his competition on the ground, Morgan was able to ride to an uncontested win. Matt Winchester finished second for the overall in the Novice class. Results PIW: L Daniel Fowler (Yam); 2. Andy Morgan (Yam); 3. Danny Harris (Yam). 60 NOV: L Eric Nye (Kaw); 2. Sellards sails at Amherst MX By Peggy Adamic AMHERST, OH, ocr. 4 Brock Sellards rode to four moto wins at the Amherst Meadowlarks MC's track, where 246 riders were on hand for the final round of the CRA Fall MX Series. Gear/ScottiRad n Bad/Barrs Competitionbacked Sellards sta~ted off strong in the Schoolboy class. In each of the two outings, Sellards held a better than 12-second lead on runner-up T.J. Somers at the finish. In moto one of the 80cc Senior Mini class Sam Yanitelli took the lead off the line, only to have Sellards and Karl Scott move past him through turn one_ Sellards and Scott ran 12 throughout the five-lap mota, with Yannitelli holding onto third. In moto two Sellards jumped into the quick lead with Scott again holding down second place. Sellards went unchallenged in his bid for his fourth moto win of the day, building a better than 20-second lead on Scott by the end. The large 125cc C class was split into two groups. In group one, Bryan Bellinger took his last ride in the C c1ass.before moving into the B ranks, and grabbed 2-1 moto finishes for the overall win. In moto' one, Rick Ray grabbed the lead off the line, and went on to score the win. Bellinger trailed Ray, and was within striking distance when he crashed over a tabletop. Bellinger was up in time to hold onto second. In moto two, Bellinger took the wire-towire win, and Jim Griffith placed second. Results 50: 1. Brent Maimone (M·M); 2. B.]. Wagner (Yam); 3.
