run to put him in second for the day. Steve Dresser turned two. consistent rides, but couldn't find the speed to finish higher than fifth. The 540cc class ended with Wilkins taking home the win, and Frazier scoring his third-straight championship and his fourth total. "! want to thank all my sponsors for their support," said Frazier,."And my father and Gary Bowlby for all their help." If Frazier brings home another 540cc title next year, he will beat John Williams' record of four National Championships. . Reiser had a much tighter points spread to worry about as the 800cc bikes began their competition. The class had Reiser leading with 81 points, followed by Wade Williams' 78 points, Greg Williams with 7~ points, and Harry Schreiber with 69. The tight point spread made for 'fierce competition on the hill. The bigger bikes fared better than the 540cc. machines on the Devil's Staircase, posting significantly faster times. Ten runs under eight seconds were posted, and nearly all the runs were below nine seconds. Tom Chatterton took his HarleyDavidson to the top despite' suffering from a broken ankle sustained at the previous round. A newcomer, Jack Yeck, broke his ankle on his first run at the Devil's Staircase, flipping his bike on the first jump and landing on his leg. Round one saw fast runs from Tom Reiser, Bobby Castledine, Greg and Wade Williams and Lou Gerencer Sr. Reiser was closely watching Wade Williams, but Williams couldn't generate the speed to put him ahead of Reiser.. The second run for the big bikes would resolve both the winner for the day, and champion for the year. Reiser sliced time off his first run, and sa t in second place. Wade Williams, the rider with the best chance at knocking Reiser out of the series, posted a slower run on his second attempt, eliminating the primary threat to Reiser. The fastest and most spectacular run of the event was turned in by Greg Williams. He crested the top in a mere 7.355 seconds, but the adventure began after he had already topped the hill. Williams had his nitro-fueled Honda wide open as he reached the top of the hill, and took a 55-foot launch over the top, landing on his side. He was badly jolted and was caught under the bike, but soon shook it off. The second round had little effect on the overall season standings, and the only change was that Greg Williams knocked his brother Wade down from second to third for the year. ''I'd like to thank all the members of Team USA, their families, and especially my wife for her years of support," said Reiser. Now that the season is over, the hillclimbers will get a well-deserved break until the series begins again in May. CN Results 540: 1. Ted Wilkins (Rtx); 2. Scott Everett (Tri); 3.
