MORENO VALLEY, CA, AUG. 29 In his very first ride on a 125cc Glen Branson put together a winnin~ combination of motos to top the 125cc BegInner class at StarWest Supercross Park. In moto one Branson stormed out of the gate and went neck and neck with Chris Trigueros and Kevin Zrinzo into tum one. Branson left it on a second longer than everyone else to grab the lead. Branson doubled a jump to open up a little breathing room over Trigueros, but the Suzuki rider quickly reeled in the Honda of Branson on the front section of the course. Branson again doubled on lap two, once again pulling away only to have Trigueros double the whoops to close in. On the next lap Trigueros tagged the rear tire of Branson, who went down. Branson was quickly up and under way before Zrinzo could take advantage of the fall, but Trigueros had opened up a considerable gap. With two laps to go, Branson closed the gap slightly when Trigueros had problems with a lapper. Trigueros scored the win with a cross-up over the finish-line tabletop, followed by Branson only a few bike lengths behind. Moto two saw Branson get his second holeshot of the evening as the pack funnelled into turn one, but it was Trigueros snaking by on the inside line to take the lead in the early going. On the third lap Branson soared over the double, closing the distance up on Trigueros· as the two nders charged for the next corner. Branson left the throttle on, going into the corner and the lead was his_ Branson was on the gas, leaving the Suzuki rider in his wake. Also on the move was Zrinzo, who had passed Hoeppner for third. Branson continued to extend his lead as Trigueros began to show signs of fatigue. The remainding two laps were a mater of follow the leader, with Branson nabbing the moto win and the overall. A large turnout of riders competed in the 250cc Beginner class. Jim Thrift put his Kawasaki into the lead in moto one and led it wire to wire for the win ahead of Scott Freedland and Joel Leighton, who went down three times and charged up from the back of the pack each time. . The start of moto two was a replay of moto one with Thrift getting the holeshot, but this time Leighton was right up there with him and dove to the inside line as the two went through the whoops. Once in front Leighton rode the ragged .edge, but held on and finished the moto in the lead. Thrift held onto second, knowing that was all he needed for the overall win. Results 50: J. Wright surVived a fall in the opening moto, to regroup for the overall 125cc Intermediate victory during the GFI Win A Truck Night Series, held at Perris Raceway. Wright shot out of the gate and railed the first turn with the holeshot in the first moto. Joe Tuttobene was second with Sammy Davis, ridin~ outlaw in third. Wnght was quid to pull away from the field while performing high-flyuing air antics..Tuttobene, meanwhile, pulled clear of Davis who in turn was holding up Larry Linkogles' progress towards the front. Linkogle, obviously fed up with the situation, eventually knocked Davis from his line with a strong arm pass to move into third. Wright suffered a momentary loss of concentration and fell over in a tight horseshoe turn. Tuttobene graciously accepted the lead, but Linkogle closed quickly from second. Linkogle pushed on and found a line around Tuttobene on the final lap to score the moto win. . Tuttobene finished second while Wright . rebounded for third after many laps of pounding his way through the pack. Tuttobene led the second moto but was no match for Wright, who simply powered by. Once into the leild, Wright rode a nearflawless moto while a bar-banging battle developed between Linkogle and Tuttobene for second. Linkogle tried to force his way past Tuttobene on a number of occasions, but Tuttobene held strong for the runner-up spot, finishing six seconds behind moto and overall winner Wright. Jason Matthews was untouchable in the first 250cc Novice moto. Matthews, a rider from Arizona, opened nearly a 15-second lead over BIaine Towe. Matthews went on for an easy win while Towe held off a last-lap charge by Jim Henn. Matthews was injured later in the program during another race and was a no-show for the second moto. Henn took advantage of the situation and simply walked all over the competition to score the moto and overall wins. Robert Little finished second in front of Pavlovec, Myers and Falk. Jon Leach (28) and Mike Barney (15) rode the ragged edge of control at Perris MX. Canadian road racer Pascal Picotte (7) made his dirt track debut at the Electric City ~hort Track, but was no match for 250cc Amateur ~ winner Joe Demento (90). Results 50 FIRST TIMER: 1. Demento shocking at E~ectric City Short Track By Tom Robert DUANESBERG, NY, AUG. 23 Joe Demento won the 250cc Amateur class at the Electric City Riders Short Track. Demento battled throughout the race with Canadian road racer Pascal Picotte, who competed in his first-ever dirt track race aboard a DTXconverted Yamaha YZ250. Picotte, who normally pilots a Fast by Ferracci Ducati Superbike, found the Yamaha to his liking. "I just thought I'd try. it, said Picotte. "It's a lot of fun." Picotte and Demento faced off in the heat race. Demento fought off the repeated charges of Picotte through most of the race, but Picotte nipped him at the finish line for the win. In the main, Demento jumped into the lead with Picotte hot on his tail. Demento 'stayed low on the groove, but Picotte opted to slide high in the cushion. The groove p'roved to be the better line, as Demento steadily inched away with a lead that he would never surrender. Don McGill rode the groove and scooted past Picotte, as did Stan Nittiski a few laps later. Picotte eventually. pulled off the track near the end of the race. Green Island Autobody/Uncle Willie's Machine Shop/ Cycles Etc-sponsored Demento went on to earn the win ahead of McGill and Nittiski. Bill Newell won the Sportsman class and finished second in the Senior A class behind Jay Skidmore aboard the same Triumph 750 that Bill Anderson rode to victory in the Vintage class. Duane Veeder topped the large field of Open Experts after a hard-fought battle with runnerup Bill Newkirk and third-place Ron Beauvais. Results 125 AM: I. Andrew Miller (Hon); 2. Bense bombs Hurricane Hills Motocross By Rolfe Otterness MAZEPPA, MN, AUG. 9 Chris Bense had a stellar day at the Hurricane Hills motocross track, capturing the Open A and 17-24 A class wins despite some talented competition. Extremely warm and humid weather had an adverse effect on many of the competitors, who had experienced relatively cool racing conditions throughout the season. The Hurricane Hills trad was in excellent form thanks to recent rain and good cloud cover. Chad Winecke jumped to an early lead in the first moto of the 17-24 A class. Aaron Carlson, Mike Lemke and Bense ran in . pursuit, and Bense bla§ted his KX500 into the lead by the end of the first lap. He had no problem maintaining control to the end.
