Scotty Walker finished in the runner-up position both times out ahead of Bob Stephenson. Gary Dudley didn't have it as easy in the Vet Intermediate class as he couldn't overcome the speedy Joel Harriott and had to settle for second in the first moto. Charlie Strong fought off Randy Anderson to take third. Dudley was the fastest rider through turn one in moto two. Strong was running second and started feeling pressure from Harriott until Harriott fell in a whoop section and dropped to last. Dudley went on to win the moto and the overall. Harriott put in a great ride coming from way back to pressure Strong for second at the checkered flag. Results P/W A; I. James Thompson (Yam); 2. Scoll Howe (Yam); 5. Jerry Marunez (Yam); 4. Daily dials in Bear Creek Speedway win By Kevin George CANTON, OH, AUG. 22 Brian Daily won the Handicap main at Bear, Creek Speedway after battling all night with Scotty Brown. Brown had beat Daily to the line in two heats and the Scratch main and was intent on completing a perfect evening, but Daily had other ideas. Brown was using a 22-inchrear wheel and running the cushion, while Daily mounted a conventional rim with a well-worn tire to ride down low. Daily started-from the 6O-yard line, but Brown blasted by from the 80 when the green light illuminated. Phil Kalusha led until the halfway point, when Kurt Cerwinsky took over. Brown and Daily's battle soon carried them to the front, and they both caught and passed the leader Cerwinsky. They charged around the next lap side by side until a slower rider fell in front of Brown, forcing him to go wide. Daily took advantage to score the win. • Results CONSI: I. Kurt Cerwinsky; 2. Schmidt sails to Hunt MX wins By Michael Harasmisz HUNT, NY, AUG. 2~ Kawasaki-mounted Donny Schmidt earned overall wins in the 125 and 250cc Expert classes at Hunt Moto Park, where 260 riders turned out to compete under sunny skies. Track conditions were excellent all day. In the first 125cc Expert moto Paul Austin jumped out to an early lead and led every lap for the win. Schmidt finished second after moving up from a bad start. The second moto was Schmidt's all' the way as he led from start to finish to claim the win. Larry Fitzgerald and Joe Ellington battled over second with Fitzgerald getting the nod. Schmidt and Austin were out front early in the first 250cc Expert moto and never looked back. Schmidt took the checkered flag with Austin second. Moto two kept the spectators on their feet from the first lap to the last lap. Greg Meedar took the holeshot with Chris Pecora and Austin close behind. Meedar led for two laps before Austin took over the lead, white Schmidt was closin~ in on the leaders after a midpack start. With the checkered flag in sight Austin looked to have the win, but as he squared a corner to take a smoother line Schmidt railed the outside and made a surprise pass into the next right-hander. With no time to repass, Austin settled for second as Schmidt took a well-deserved win. . Ron Abbey lead the first Schoolboy moto with Pat Mils and Josh Rizzo close behind. Jake Ellsworth passed Abbey on the last lap to take the win. Abbey grabbed the lead in the second moto but Ellsworth took over the lead only to go down in a corner. With Abbey leading, Ellsworth made a pass on the back hill and held on [or the overall win_ Results P/W: 1. Aaron Sheherd (Itj); 2. Bradley Bourne (Yam); 5. Mike Silvarole (Yam); 4. Watkins captures Outlaw GP win By David A. Procida SAN BERNARDINO, CA, AUG. 16 Temperatures in the 90s kept the turnout mild, but action was as hot as ever as Larry Watkins kept a cool head to capture tiie Veteran Novice class win in the California Racing Club's Outlaw Gran Prix. When the starter dropped the green flag Watkins led the pack into turn one. Watkins was on the gas as Tim McA,.dams and Alex Spinelli were in pursuit as the riders started to sort themselves out as they headed for the motocross portion of the course. Watkins was still in the lead as they reappeared from the back section. He had built up asmall advantage on McAdams, and Chris Perez was now running in third. Rounding out the top five were Spinelli and Lewis Wright. Watkins began catching the slower Intermediates, who had start on the wave before the Novice class. This slowed his progress a bit and allowed the other novices to close up the gap. At the midway point in the race Perez had closed to within a couple of bike lengths of the leader and a short way back McAdams had his hands full with a hard-charging Duke Loppnow. With three laps to go Perez came from the back section in first place, but it only lasted a couple of laps before Watkins reclaimed the lead for good. Meanwhile, Loppnow had passed both Wright and Spinelli and was running in fourth. He used the long straightaway to his advantage and powered by McAdams just before the MX track. Late in the race McAdams got his second wind and began to reel in Loppnow but with time and the heat working against him, he had to settle for fourth place. At just past the 45-minute Mark Watkins took the checkered flag with Perez right behind him. Results PIW A: I. James Thompson. PIW MOD: I. Ray Perez; 2. Timothy Thompson. P/W B-1: I. By Greg Robertson PALMDALE, CA, AUG. 23 Honda-mounted Randy Gillespie survived' two grueling 20-minute motos on the demanding Los Angeles County Raceway motocross track to take home first overall honors in the Over The Hill Gang Intermediate class. Carl Powell had the quickest reaction time and led the first moto, followed by Steve Gordon and Gary Pangburn. Pangburn quickly got around Powell, but went down hard and was done for the day. Powell cruised out front while Paul Ikeda pushed his way past Gordon for second. Tim Trella appeared to be the fastest rider on the track as he picked off one rider per lap until he caught up to Powell with two laps remaining. The final lap saw a two-rider sprint to the finish, with Trella coming out on top. Gillespie put in an excellent ride coming from ninth to finish third. The first two laps of the second moto belonged to Gordon, as Gillespie and Ikeda trailed. Trella swapped in the sand, crashed and remounted in last place. By the fourth lap, Gillespie enjoyed a comfortable lead which he held to the checkered flag. Powell was on the move after an off-track excursion and moved past Gordon and Ikeda for second on the sevehth lap. With two laps remaining, Powell tried to close on leader Gillespie, but ran out of steam and settled for second. Trella worked through the field to finish a close fourth behind Mic Rodgers. When the gate dropped for the start of the first OTHG Novice moto, Mike Jervey took charge with Randy Bruce andJim McConnell in tow. Bruce wasted little time and took the lead on the third lap and was never contested. A three-rider battle raged between McConnell~ Jervey and Michael Fernandez for second place. Jervey eventually pulled away to earn second at the finish, while Fernandez went down and dropped to sixth. McConnell appeared to have third place in hand, but Joe Churilla jumped' past him to change that while entering tlie last turn. Bruce smoked the field in the second moto, going wire to wire for the win and the overall. McConnell ran .second before Jervey got by at the halfway mark. McConnell a~in had Churilla to contend with but this time held him off to finish third. Results BEG: I. Chris McConnell (Kaw); 2. Steve Basmajian (Yam); 5. Tim Whisnant (Yam); 4. Art Rivas (Kaw); 5. Aden ..wesome at Perris Spdwy By Scott Daloisio PERRIS, CA, AUG. 27 For the fourth time this year, young John _ Aden raced home first to win the Handicap main event at Brian and Judy Church's Lake Perris Speedway. National Champion Mike Faria emerged victorious in the Scratch main event. Aden, whose early season prowess at Lake Perris had netted him a starting position on the 40-.yard line, had not been winning of late. Therefore, promoters moved him up to the 30. From there, he snatched the lead from Rob Ball early in the race. As soon as the 19-yearold pushed the KAAT Equipment Leasing/ Design's Royale/Jim's Towing/Speedway USA-backed Jawa into first place, he began to move away. Faria, Bobby Schwartz and Steve Lucero were coming from the back yardage. Stuck
