Ron McKenzie and Dave Phillips tied for first
place in the Professional class and first place
overall with perfect zero-point scores at the
2nd Annual BRA Vintage Motorcycle Trials
at Helm's Cycle Park. Ossa guru Lee Mathews
finished second with two dabs.
The nine-section course was laid out by
AHRMA Executive Director Jeff Smith and
Ron McKenzie of the All Iowa Trials Riders
Association. Three of the sections provided
more demanding lines for the pro riders. All
- finishers were required to ride each section
three times.
Thirty riders were entered in the Amateur
class on a variety of vintage machinery
ranging from British and Italian exotica to
Japanese dual-purpose machines, the event
being open to any pre-1975 moiorcycle.
However, most of the high finishers rode
dedicated trials bikes from the early '70s.
James MatlSon was top amateur with a score
of six on a '72 Yamaha TY250.

Winner Travis Langston (6) roosted past Paige Hilliard (29) at Muddy Creek MX.
Winecke rode the rest of the way in second
with Lee Erickson surging by Lemke and
Carlson midway through the moto to take over
third.
Erickson made a bid for the win in the early
going of the second moto, with Bense and
Matt Hills close behind. Erickson couldn't
hold off Bense though, and the Kawasaki rider
won the second moto. Erickson held second
with l25cc-mounted Carlson taking third
from Matt Hills near the midpoint of the
moto.
Bense romped out front in the first Open
A class moto. Bill' Engstrom held second in
the early going, then was displaced by his
younger brother Robbie near the halfway
point. Robbie Engstrom tried to catch the
leader" but expended too much energy in the
hot conditions and fell prey to Jeff Colbert's
last-lap charge.
In the second moto, Bense blistered the track
to score his fourth moto win of the day, while
Colbert put his KX into second once again.
