La Playa Grand Prix Series: Round 4 Young untouchable in Mexican sand By Donn Maeda ROSARITO, B.C. MEXlCO, AUG. 16 alifornian Mike Young headed south of the border and roosted the 250cc Pro class competition at round four of the Too Much Fun Promotions La Playa GP Series, held in the Cantamar Sand Dunes, just south of Rosarito. The Tecate Beersponsored event drew over 100 entrants and a large number of local spectators. Young dazzled the crowd as he romped away with convincing wins in both motos aboard his La Habra Suzuki/ Sinisalo/Sh'oei/Smith/Race Tech/ CTi/WOR-backed Suzuki RM250. Racers competed in two 20 minute motos on a three mile course that wound through the sand dunes and dropped down onto the beach. The race featured an old-fashioned grand prix start and racers were required to start with their left hand on their helmet. In the first combined 250cc and Open Pro moto, Young assumed control of the lead early on, but took a trip over the handlebars on the second lap and dropped back to third behind Billy McClintock and Open Pro Scot Harden. "I don't know what happened," said Young. "I was about to drop down onto the beach and all of a sudden I was on my head." Young recovered quickly, though, and powered back into the point position within a lap. Once into the lead, Young began to establish a lead that would stretch to nearly a minute at the finish. McClintock held on to second, while Harden finished third overall and easily topped the Open Pro class aboard his Thor/Acerbis/Smith/ RK/DuraJube/FMF-sponsored factory KTM 300. Marc Burnett, Jamie Campbell and Mike Gonzales rounded out the top five riders across the finish line. In the second moto, Young again jumped out front, but this time he would make no mistakes. With each lap, Young added to his lead and enjoyed a 90 second lead at the finish. Open Pro Jim Loh maintained second overall for much of the race, but a crash allowed McClintock and Harden to scoot past. Harden . stalked McClintock throughout the race, and waited until the last lap to perform a crowdpleasing pass over the finish line jump. Harden was uncontested for the Open Pro class win over Campbell and Loh, while filing in behind Young in the 250cc Pro class were McClintock and Burnett. "It was a blast," said Young. "The track was a lot of fun and except for that endo, everything went real smoothly for me."
