~ LOCAL EVENTS m Dave Durelle (58) outran Dave Camtin (27) and Rich King (80) to win Saturday's Expert class at the Rooks County Fair. Rich King (80) came out on top of a very close battle with Dave Durelle on Friday. Mike Young styled to a convincing 250cc Pro class win in the La Playa GP. Scot Harden (56) dazzled the local spectators with this last-lap finish-line pass. ~a;. -Rooks County Fair Short Track King, Durelle split wins By Dave Hoenig STOCKTON, KS, AUG. 14 & 15 ich King and Dave Durelle traded wins in two Expert-class finals at the Rooks County Fair's HalfMile oval. King was the winner in a close battle with Durelle in Friday'S exciting event. "I didn't think he was that close coming off (turn) four, so I just made sure I hooked up," said King. "It was within half a wheel." . The win was so close that not everyone in the grandstands was convinced that the King Racing/ Wesley Engines/Shoei/J&J Cycle/ Ames Cycle-backed Harley rider had indeed held back Durelle. . Jeff Dietz topped the list of 22 Expert-class riders during the time trials with a 25.82-second lap. Durelle was just a heartbeat behind at 25.83, and Andy Tresser earned the pole for the third heat with a 25.91-second run. Marc Gifford worked his way around Dave Camlin in the first Expert heat and motored to an easy win. Mike Reid pulled to an early lead in the second heat, but DureUe ran him down. Durelle couldn't get by though, and had to settle for second. R 22 After King won the final heat, Tom Colson rode to an easy win in the semi. King holeshot the main, with Durelle quickly moving into second. Durelle locked onto King and seemed to be waiting patiently for a mistake from the leader. The two pulled far away from a battle for third between Camtin, Reid and Anderson. Coming into the final turns, King had a small amount of breathing room on Durelle, but as the leading duo exited turn four and headed for the checkered flag, the large crowd was on its feet. Durelle got a better drive off of the final turn and pulled ~p beside King at the finish, nearly pulling off the last-second pass, but King held on for the win. "I played it a little too cautious down in turn four," said King. Durelle said, "I had good speed off four. I could really gain on him, but he was getting through one and two really good. The opportunity finally came when I was close enough to pass him. I looked down at the line as we crossed, (and) I thought I had him. Maybe tomorrow." Vic McAnally pushed his HarleyDavidson to the front of the Juniorclass main. He built up an early lead, but was run down by Clayton Hull. Hull rode McAnally's rear tire for the last six laps, but couldn't force his way around, and McAnally held on for the WIn. "I knew if he was going to catch me it would be in the corner," said McAnally. "I think I had more motor. It's amazing what horsepower 'can do for you." On the second day of competition, Durelle was able to avenge his day-one loss, scoring the .win over Dave Camlin. "I saw Dave back there, but there ws no way I was going to let him catch me," said Durelle. Durelle set the tone when he hustled his Donahue H-D/General Engineering/Suburban Motors/Ron W ood/B ieffe/ S torz/Tsu b aki/ Maxima-sponsored Wood-Rotax to a fast Expert-class time of 25.31 seconds. He then ran away with the win in the first heat of the Expert class. Camlin easily topped the second heat, while Tom Troudt was the big winner in the final heat. In the main, Durelle survived some early contact to post another excellent start. . "Dave (Camlin) and I hit a couple of times off the line," said Durelle. "He hit my cl utch lever and the bike slowed. I got it back going and then it wheelied, but we gathered it back up." The lead trio of Durelle, Camlin and King pulled away from a pack. consisting of Brian Anderson, Troudt, Kelly Larkin, Dale Jenneman and Greg Crow. "I was screwing up real bad in turns three and four," said Durelle. 'The last couple of laps I just cruised there, so Iwouldn't come off the groove." Durelle stayed out of Carnlin's reach and motored on to the win. King flipped up his face shield and dropped back, later complaining of oil from Camlin's bike. . Russ Werner rocketed off the line first in the Pro/Am main. Kirk Jenneman held down second, but Derek Brooks was working his way up from fifth. Brooks eventually took over the lead on lap five and pulled away for a convincing win. With only two laps remaining, Jenneman passed Werner for second. tN Results . FRIDAY PRO/AM: I.
