With storms and flash floods to worry about, the crowd was one of the smallest in the history of the two-year-old track. Those fans who did attend saw Faria score a clean sweep on the Scratch side of the program, including his sterling effort in the main_ Coming off the pole, Faria saw teammate and chief-rival Scott Brant ejected from the race for touching the tapes on the start. That cut the field down to just Faria, Bobby Schwartz and Steve Lucero_ When referee Cary Pollard tet the tapes fly, Faria steered his Russell Racing/Oilzalll Shoei/Prime TicketlA-I Plank-backed Godden to the point. Schwartz was second, with Lucero third. Schwartz and Lucero stayed close on the first lap, but by the end of lap two, Faria was long-gone and looking for the checkered flag. Lucero, making his first racing appearance since breaking his foot in early July, gOt by Schwartz on lap two but had little chance of catching Faria. When the four-lap' race came to an end, Faria had a seven-bike length advantage over Lucero, with Schwartz a distant third. The Handicap main was won by Jes Ochoa, who took the lead at the start and never looked back. By the halfway point, Ochoa was ahead by six bike lengths. Faria, after starting on the 60, was trying to ride the cushion early in the eight lap race. When he could not find the desired drive, he dropped down to the pole. Ochoa stayed on the blue groove all the way. When the checkered flag came out, he had the win by over half a straightaway ahead of Bobby Hedden. Results SCRATCH: I. Mike Faria (Cdn); 2. Sober COSTA MESA, CA, AUG. 7 Charlie Venegas won his first-ever Scratch main event at the United States' oldest and most prestigious venue; the Orange County Fairgrounds. In the Handicap main Brad Oxley prevented a Venegas sweep when he managed to push past the former northern California rider on the last lap. Jim "The Animal" Fishback narrowly defeated Jerry Laidlaw in the special Harley-Davidson Super Final. Venegas, who now resides full-time in southern California, drew the inside pole starting position for the main event. Next to him in lane two was Lance King, with Mike Faria and Bobby Schwartz completing the lineup. Venegas guessed right at the start and jumped out to an immediate advantage. Faria and King both went after Venegas, with King down low and Faria up high. Faria found the outside line to be deteriorating and quickly pulled down to the fast inside line, but by that time Schwartz had moved into third place. King continued to try reeling in the leader but by lap two Venegas was gone. Venegas simply had to complete the remain- -~- For Information, qontact Racing Entertmises Inc. at: . 13223 Black Mt.
