In the OTHG Novice class Roger Sisson returned to the racing scene in a dramatic way by claiming the overall win in that class. In the first moto the Sisson Graphix-backed rider quickly shot into the lead after briefly trailing a Beginner-class rider around the first few turns. Once in front, Sisson quickly put some distance on the rest of the pack. Following Sisson to the checkered flag was Danny Lowers, who moved up to second after fighting his way around Chuck Holmes. Moto two had Randy Godich taking the holeshot followed by Jim Terry. Lurking back in fourth place was Lowers. On the second lap Sison again took over the lead as Godich faded. Terry was also soon around Godich, and refused to let Sisson out of his sights. Sisson was on the gas though, and managed to keep the lead till the checkered flag. was working good. I was just keeping the wheels in line and letting il hook up," said Mark. "Mark had a line off four that I just couldn't keep up with. I've always done well here. At least this time it was my brother who beal me," said Erick. Brian Anderson filled OUl the winner's circle. Tresser, Jenneman, Hebb, Orr, Eklund, Crew, Guinn and Annen rounded out the finishers. Grubers grab Peoria ST gold By Dave Hoenig PEORIA, n., AUG. I 32 "It's my first ride of the year..What a way to start the year," said Mark Gruber after leading his brother Erick across the finish line at the Team Grayboy-promoted short track at Peoria Speedway. The four heat race wins went to Rich King, Dave Hebb, Jeff Eklund and Dale Jenneman. King ran away with the first semi, while Erik Graybeal ran alone in second. Jeff Annen edged Charlie Orr for third. Andy Tresser was the easy winner of the second semi, well ahead of Brian Anderson. Hebb was alone in third while Greg Crow clipped Rex Fisher for the last transfer. Mike Guinn led the last semi until Eklund slipped by. Mark Gruber also passed Guinn, but couldn'l get around Eklund for the win. Guinn held off Jenneman for third. At the start of the main, King read the light perfectly and led Andy Tresser into turn one of the Expert main. The Gruber brothers, in varying order, took control of second and third. "When I got by Tresser, Erick snuck under both of us, then Rich kind of gave it to us," said Mark. King's Rotax seized entering turn three, leaving him laying in front of II fastapproaching riders. Luckily, everyone missed him and the race went on. Mark Gruber inherited the lead. "After I got Erick the second time, my line Weinert bums Southwick MX By Austin Morrissey SOUTHWICK, MA, AUG. 8 . Jimmy Weinert rode to the 250<:c, Over 30 and Over 40 class wins at round eight of the AHR.MAlVintage Iron National MX Series held at MX338. Close racing was the theme in the 500cc Expert class, with Mark Sullivan going head to head with Richard Heins, both aboard 1974 Suzuki TM400s. Sullivan bested Heins with a 1-1 tally for the overall. , In the hotly contested 125cc Expert class, Greg Bastek put together two great rides to score the overall on a borrowed Yamaha YZ. An unexpected Dash_For Cash combined all Novice, Intermediate and Expert-class riders, in separate gates. Weinert completed his day with the overall in the Expert division, with Richard Shipman the top Intermediate and Devin Trexler grabbing first place in the Novice division. Results 125 EX: I. Car: conquers Double Cross GP By Frank Beach MORE 0 VALLEY, CA, AUG. 8 Rick Carr put together two moto wins to capture the overall victory in the Vet Novice class at the new Starwest Supercross Track. Double Cross deviated from its usual format of one 45-minute moto to two 20minute motos, which complemented lhe technical track and over 100 degree temperatures. Moto one saw Joel Plavajka lead the way with Steve Dalton and Carr hot on his rear fender. Plavajka's lead was short-lived though, as he lost his drive out of a right· hander and gave Dalton the lead. Carr put the pressure on Plavajka for the second spot and soon made quick work of Plavajka and closed the gap on Dalton. The two riders dueled for the lead, and Carr showed Dalton his front wheel in nearly every lurn. Carr edged out Dalton for the lead by out-breaking him in a turn. With the lead in his hands, Carr distanced himself from Dalton and easily took the moto win as Dalton and Wayne Cummings finished second and third, respectively. Tom Dunham holeshot the second moto with John Chapman, Plavja~ and Carr in tow. Carr quickly displaced Plavajka, and Chapman and was soon pressuring Dunham for the lead. Carr rode smoothly and slipped past Dunham. Carr again easily took the checkered flag and the overall win with Wayne Cummings fighting his way to second overall with 3-2 moto scores. Junior Vet Novice riders Brian Platte turned in a hard-fought first moto and a runaway second moto victory to claim top honors. Off lhe line, Rob Van Damme pulled the holeshol and sel a blislering pace. Brian Miller and Platte malched Van Damme's pace and the trio waged a three-way batlle for first. Milelr was able to muscle his big-bore Honda into lhe lead, displacing Van Damme - who now had his hands full with a determined Platte. Miller made a costly mislake by stalling his bike in a corner lelling Van Damme and Plalle pass. The next two laps saw the lead change four limes as Platte gOl the upper hand on Van Damme, who started lO fade. Plalle went on for the win as Van Damme held on for second Wilh Miller a distant third. The start of moto two looked like a carbon copy of the first mOlO with Van Damme nailing the holeshol over Miller and Platte. Plalle instantly shot past Miller and set out to catch Van Damme. "I have the speed and the good starts to win, but I need to work on my stamina" said Van Damme. Platte's pace was just too much and he roosted past Van Damme for the lead and the overall win. Van Damme posted another second for second overall with Miller third. Results 50: I. Chris Martinez; 2. Senll Simon. 60: I. Clill jennings: 2. Mark milh: 5. john MacAfee. 80: I. MUSKEGON, MI, AUG. 9 Paybacks were uppermost in the mind of Chad Davis after getting beaten in heat one of the 250cc class by his cousin Jaramia Becker. Davis felL the fruslralion of coming wilhin inches of the Kawasaki rider al the checkered .£lag giving himself all the incentive .needed to try a littLe harder in the final. Davis and his yellow Suzuki stood out on the start line, as he was surrounded by a bunch of Honda red and a louch of Kawasaki green. He went for the throttle as the light switched to green with Becker following him into the hairpin off lurn one. Davis negotiated the crick transfer cleanly, but Becker fell victim to the tight corner, his crash bringing OUl the red £lag before lap one was complete. Becker was back on the penalty line for the restart and charged through the front line on the signaL Becker walched as Davis and John Griffes raced down the front stretch, bUl when Griffes went wide Becker stayed close to the inside, tucking himself neady behind Davis. Davis wasn't looking back as he put some distance between himself and Becker. By the halfway point Davis had opened a gap on Becker, who had also opened up a lead on the Hondas. They headed for the checkered flag with Davis taking the lead, the win, and his sweet revenge. Mike Forro appeared to have the 85cc class under control, keeping his cool under fire as B.J. Leach and Greg Vincent fired everything they had al the Kawasaki rider. Forro tried to pull away, but stayed on the gas too long and missed the TT transfer on lap three. He circled back around dropping to fourth behind Vincent. , Leach meanwhile, took the victory, while Forro fought to gain ground behind him. Justin Gibson, who was fourth when Forro failed to make the corner moved into third and later found another opening to end up second at the checkered flag. Forro made an attempt at the last available trophy, but came up short at the wire. Vincent finished third. R.esults .',0: I. Henry Wiles (Yam); 2. Pal Hawley (Yam); 5. Tom Link (Yam); 4.
