Turpin tops at Bonneville RR By Jon Renak SALT LAKE CITY, UT, AUG. 16 Shane Turpin got mad when a Colorado rider took Bonneville Raceway's track record home with him last month. He got so mad he changed sponsors, tore his Yamaha FZRlOOO apart and came out smoking in. the fourth .round of the Utah Sport Bike Association's summer road race series. Turpin, Utah's fastest big bike rider, got sweet revenge when he- became Bonneville's fastest man during the prestigious Unlimited Superbike race. Not even the presence of Red Line Oil's Joe Brett Williams shook the Utah native as he took a commanding lead over Williams' beefed-up Honda RC30 through the first lap and powered his way toward the record, breaking Don Hough's month-old mark of 1:02.54 with a dazzling 1:02.44 in his fourth trip around the track. Williams stayed close to place second while Team Ztreem teammates Damon Carr and Tony Johnson took third and fourth in the day's most exciting racing. William's second-place finish didn't stop him from blowing the field away in the Heavyweight Superbike race. The northern Californian was being clocked at speeds in excess of 150 mph at the tail end of Bonneville's long straightaway and he was never challenged after the second tUTn of the opening lap. He won easily, followed by Carr, Johnson and Aaron Laningham, who was riding his rebuilt Suzuki GSXR750 just a month after a brutal crash nearly totalled the bike. In other action, Carr and Johnson continl, led their rivalry for the top expert spot. Johnson narrowly leads Carr in the points total due to' an early-season crash by the latter rider, but Carr keeps cutting the margin as the series continues. Johnson swept the Supersport events, finishing first in three of the four categories, while Carr won the Middleweight Superbike race and also took home the Race of the Wasatch GTU honors. The victory increased Hansen's chances of winning a new Honda CR250 from Tulare Honda. Moto one saw Mark Mulliner holeshot the pack with Hansen and Jeff Marquez running second and third. A major battle soon developed between Mulliner and Hansen as the two battled for the lead in the Huron loam. Hansen showed Mulliner his front wheel several times but Mulliner stubbornly refused to give up the lead and held·on for the win. In the second moto Mulliner again nailed the holeshot, while Hansen and Marquez followed. Marquez ended his hopes for a good finish as he went over the bars early in the moto. Mulliner soon found himself on the ground, and had to relinquish his lead to a grateful Hansen. Hansen went on to the checkered flag to score the overall win. r CONGRATULATIONS TO T5U~KI TSUBAKI CHAIN WIN ERS . - - - - - - - - - NMA Grand Nat'l Championship MX Ponca City, OK Aug. 5-9 - - - - - - - - • JR.
