McClellans master Splash In' Splatter Trial By Don Williams 30 AZUSA, CA, AUG. 9 After batlling it out all day long in the heat, smog and water of the San Gabriel River the McClellan brothers, Brad and Craig, were tied at 54 points after 30 sections at the Valley Observed Trials Enthusiasts' Splash 'n' Splatter II TriaL When the cleans by the two Yamaha riders were totalled by score keeper jennifer Hathaway, Brad triumphed over Craig, 10-9, to take first place in the Intermediate class at the seventh round of the American Trials Association Championship Series. Brad McClellan used a dozen-point/halfdozen-clean final-loop surge to come from six points behind for the win. His brother Craig turned in three IS-point loop cards and grabbed five of his clean's on the. opening circuit. The competition was also neaTly as hot as the 95° weather in the Senior (30+) Intermediate division. Larry Varnell rode his Yamaha TY350 to a two-point lead after the opening lap. His closest pursuer, David Rector, caught him on the second lap while the rest of the competition faded. Varnell saved his best loop for last as he bettered Rector's final lap score by four and earned a three-point win and the best overall Intermediate score. The 10 sections, most of which were designed by VOTE President Kurt Hathaway, alternated between water crossings and the rock gardens of the San Gabriel Canyon ORV area. Beginners, as well as upper class riders, rode through rapids and deep water. The event lacked the large obstacles usually found at ATA events and, instead, relied on highly technical sections that took a larger-than. normal number of points from the.70 entrants as they followed the canyon wall-hugging loop. The Senior Beginners also enjoyed a tough batlle. All four riders were within four dabs of each other after the first loop. Larre Butterfield dropped out of contention on the second loop while Wolfgang Burke and Ted Zinsmann tied for the lead. When Zinsmann faltered on the last loop, Steve Glanzman swooped in with an attempt to take the win with a strong five-point third loop. But, Burke held him off to win by three dabs. Veteran (50+) division rider Bryan Bonson had the lowest overall Beginner score, including a miraculous one-dab final loop. Sweetwater Trials-sponsored Gas-Gas rider Kevin Reynolds checked in with the best overall Novice score as he won the Senior division. Senior rider Kent Graham topped all the Sportsman class riders and visting Belgian rider Oliver Clamagirand won the Championship class by 40 points. Results C'SHIP: 1. Oliver Clamagirand (G·G); 2. Sober SAN BERNARDINO, CA, AUG. 12 Northern California's top rider, Bart Bast, made his 1992 southern California return a memorable one as he earned the Scratch main event win over a formidable field. Gary Ackroyd rode to the wire-to-wire victory in the Handicap main. . Bast drew the pole for the start in the Scratch main, while on the outside sat Bobby Schwaru. In lane three was Scott Brant and Chris Manch~ster completed the field in lane two. As the starting tapes went up Schwaru and his Russell Racing-backed GM found the drive to propel him into the initial lead. Bast gated second and was looking for a way , around the former National Champion when Schwaru' bike unexpectedly slowed. Bast quickly took control of the lead spot as Schwartz pulled to the infield with a dead motor. Brant and Manchester both pushed hard behind Bast but could not find a way around the former British League regular. Manchester made it close as he pulled up next to Bast on the final turn, but Bast held on to the fast line and the win. Three ricters, Andy Northrup, Bobby Hedden and Gary Ackroyd lined up on the 30-yard line for the start of the Handicap main. On the 40 sat John Aden, while the 50-yard line held Scott Brant, Manchester and Charlie Venegas. The eighth and final entry was Mike Faria on the 60. The day's hot weather no doubt caused the early demise of the outside line that 22-inch rear-tire masters like Faria, Brant and Manchester regularly use to gain an advantage. Ackroyd took the lead from the start and never looked back. Northrup fell in behind him, looking to drive underneath, but found Ackroyd's Harbor Radiator/Scot! Goggles/ Cirello Racing/Yoko/Brant Engineering/ Wenn-backed Weslake too tough to catch. Aden was quick to move up behind Northrup in third. but could not dislodge him from the groove and finally finished fourth. Brant trailed Aden for most of the race but used a do-or-die lunge at the checkered flag to claim third place. Results SCRATCH: I. Ban Bast (Wes); 2. Chri. Manehester (Jaw); 3. Scott Bran' (Jaw); 4. Durelle dazzling at Sturgis ST By Dave Hoenig STURGIS, SD, AUG. 9 Davey Durelle capitalized on a slip by early race leader Davey Carolin to earn the Expert class win at the jackpine Gypsies M.e. clubgrounds half mile. Camlin rocketed into the lead aboard his Brenny's Cycles-sponsored Harley-Davidson with Andy Tresser and Durelle in hot pursuit. Durelle was quick to make a move, and slid his Donahue H-D/General Engineering/ Harley-Davidson Inc./Bieffe/Suburban Motors/Storz Performance/Tsubaki/Maxima/Perform Filters-sponsored HarleyDavidson past Tresser as they entered turn three. Once into second, Durelle closed in on Camlln and the two riders began to pull away from the rest of the pack. Tresser led Tom Troudt, Paul Polhemus and Dale jenneman in a battle for third. On lap seven, Camlin slipped off the groove and Durelle zipped by for the lead. "I was going to wait until the last lap, but he just slipped once and I had to go for it," said Durelle. "I only slipped a little bit, but that's Durelle - he doesn't need much room," said Camlin, who seemed to drop off the pace in the remaining laps. At the finish, Durelle enjoyed a comfortable lead over Camlin, Tresser and Polhemus. Tory Bostrom holeshot the junior main but had James Hart breathing down his neck as he entered turn one. While Bostrom and Hart began to pull away, jaime Aguilar, Ben Bostrom, Eric Green and Phillip Lash argued over third. On lap eight, Tory Bostrom left a little too much room and Hart zipped by and into the lead. Once out front, Hart pulled out the stops and ran away. Hart crossed the finish line well ahead of Tory Bostrom, while Ben Bostrom charged past Aguilar on the last lap to earn third. Results MINI: I. Jesse Blakeman (Yam); 2. Jamey Mailloux (Hon); 3. PALMDALE, CA, AUG. 14 David Moreno used a consistent 1-2 score "to claim overall honors in the Pee Wee B-2 divison at California Racing Club's Friday night motOGI'OSS, held under the lights at Los Angeles County Raceway. Morena led every lap and took the checkered flag going away in the opening moto. Gerard Patin gated second but soon had Anthony Barbacovi and Blake Margheim making life miserable for him. The three riders battled down to the wire with Patin bobbling in the last tum ana allowing Barbacovi to slip past and finish second. The second moto was Marheim's turn to run and hide, as he greeted the checkered flag 10 seconds ahead of Moreno. Anthony Morris diced with Barbacovi for the first few laps before pulling away to pressure Moreno by the last lap. Margheim's excellent second moto gave him second overall. jason Wood was smoking the first l25cc Novice moto before going down on the second lap and dropping to last. Aaron Wasner inherited the lead and pulled away to win by a comfortable margin. A three-way shootout for second place had Karl Huey finishing just inches ahead of Dana Vanstel and Wood, who had worked back up through the pack. It was all Wood in the second moto, as he gated perfectly and never looked back. Wasner closed in on Wood with a cQuple of laps remaining, but got caught up in lappers. Finishing second allowed Wasner to take home the first-place overall trophy. After missing practice, Mike Dunlap used the first combined 250cc Intermediate/Pro class moto to learn the track. Dunlap gated last but methodically picked off one rider a lap to take control by the checkered flag. David Casada led the intermediates for the first half of the moto before Scott Mumford jumped into the lead. Roy Bremenour worked up from a poor start to get by Mumford with one lap remaining and score the win. Mumford held on to second over Billy Paul. , joel Tokarsky edged out Dunlap for the second-moto holeshot and held him at bay for two laps. Dunlap quickly took over the reins and pulled away for the win. Tokarsky finished second while Casada was the top Intermediate class rider all the way to the checkered flag. Bremenour was allover Casada but couldn't find a way around and settled for second in the moto, which gave him first overall for the evening. Results PIW MOD: I. Ray Perez (Yarn); 2.
