Brad Flint and Tom Steen worked their way up into the front-runners, and decided to make their move on lap four. Riding high on the cushion as they approached tum three, the two entered the turn too fast, and exited the track. Lap seven saw Estelle and Hunter make their move on the leaders in the same turn where the Flint/Steen duo had their scare, but with better success. Sumner ANTIGO, WI, JULY 18-19 The Rib Moufltain Riders hosted the first ProAm motorcycle races at Langlake County Fairgrounds since 1987, and Steve Champine won Saturday's 600cc final, as well as the 750cc title in the Wisconsin State Professional Championships, which were featured on the first day of the event John Dillenburg came out of retirement to disrupt the 250cc class by posting an easy win. Dave Cartwri~ht, J.R. Schnabel and Brian Zurn finished In order behind Dillenburg. Lee Johnson found himself on the back row when the green light sent the 400cc class away, . but dove under the pack as they hit turn one. Johnson scored an impressive victory, well ahead of Rick Bretl, who was enjoying one of his first rides of the year. Steve Kasten grabbed the holeshot of the 600cc Pro final, with Steve Champine and Blake Ehrich in tow. On lap two, Champine motored outside turn two to take the lead which he would never relinquish. As Champine lengthened his lead at will, Kasten managed to open some breathing room on Ehrich, who came under attack from Don Paul. Paul dispatched Ehrich on lap six and set out after Kasten. Time ran out and Champine led Kasten, Paul and Ehrich across the line. The 500cc Pro State Championship saw Mark Komely nail the holeshot ahead of Todd Doughty. Steve Kasten claimed the lead on lap three, but was unable to pull away from Doughty, who had dropped Kornely to third. By the halfway flags, Terry Vestal had displaced Kornely for third and had moved up to challenge the leaders. On lap six, Doughty hit Kasten's rear tire, slowing his charge and allowing Vestal to move into contention. On the white-flag lap, Doughty moved around Vestal on the backstretch, but was unable to pass Kasten in the last 400 feet Vestal placed thud with early leader Komely, still getting used to his new RolaX, finishing fourth. The 750cc Pro Championship pitted Champine against George Istvanek. Istvanek grabbed the holeshot but Champine moved past. on his backstretch. From then on, Champine cruised to an easy win on his Del's Cycle/BMD Cycle/Suburban Motors H-Dsponsored single_ "We ~ot it set up so nice that all I gotta do is tWIst the throttle," stated Champine. "I could ride the bike for three hours without any problems." The. Championship was Champine's first since he won the Juruor Pro State Championship in 1984. Heavy rains fell Saturday night, and the s ond day was nearly cancelled due to the muddy conditions. After the track was bladed and packed, the Pro class riders were sent out to examine it. Th.e decision was made to cancel the event, and the spectators reluctantly began leaving, but several riders protested the decision and vowed to put on a show. The new format called for the running of the entire professional program first, after which the amateurs would be allowed to decide if they wanted to race. While the Pro classes featured some of the best racing of the weekend, the rain returned afterwards and washed out all but four of the Amateur classes. ~PEEOU/Rg - LAKE ODESSA, MICHIGAN t11ichigan Harley-Davidson Dealers Associafion Presenfs The 2nd Annual MICHIGAN (,00 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY, . . . ,.... \ AlJ(;()STZ1th (Rain Date August 30th) 600 National Junior National Pro-Am plus $2000 Michigan State Championship (for Michigan's Professional Riders) t: See Michigan Racing Legend Jay Springsteen!
