~ LOCAL EVENTS VanBallegooyen sweeps Hunt MX ~ By MiclJ,ael Harasmisz Photo by Jack Haley Chris Rockwell sloshed through the .rain-soaked Hunt Moto Park mud. David Lynch (131) narrowly beat Terry Varner (52) during Perris Raceway MX action. Kurt Boehlke grabbed the holeshot in the 500cc Pro-Am final, leading Todd Doughty, Steve Kasten and Bill Hoffmeister after one lap. Doughty displaced Boehlke on lap two and pulled away to win on his H-D of Appleton/Terry Doughty-sponsored, Judy Doughty-tuned Harley. Hoffmeister charged lo take second place, while Boehlke faded to fourth behind Kasten. Canadian Blake Ehrich nailed the start of the 600cc Pro-Am final and led Steve Champine, Boehlke, Doughty and Kasten into turn one. On lap two, Champine motored to the top of the track in turn two to take the lead. On the fourth lap, Ehrich and Boehlke tangled in turn two, yet both remained upright. Doughty and Kasten, who were battling right behind, dove low to avoid a collision. As Boehlke untangled himself from Ehrich, he dropped low on the track and nearly took down Doughty, who suffered a punctured rear tire from the contact. "I saw them (Boehlke and Ehrich) get together, so. I went low to miss them," recounted Doughty. "Next thing I know, Boehlke comes down and hits me. I was lucky to stay on the bike... Unfortunately, the flat tire ended his charge to the front, and for the second day in a row, Champine scored an easy win on his Del's Cycle/BMD Cycle/Suburban Motors H-Dsponsored Harley. Boehlke regrouped in time to reclaim second place ahead of Kasten and Doughty. Early leader Ehrich faded to a fifthplace finish. R.esults 36 SATURDAY 50: I. Tyler Smulders (MM); 2. I Josh Wray celebrated his 18th birthday in style with a double moto romp of the 125cc Beginner class during the GFI Win A Truck Night Series, held at Perris Raceway. Wray led the way at the onset of the first 125cc Beginner moto while Holdeman, Morris and Mike Cyr funneled into the top five. Holdeman and Morris came together down the front straight with Holdeman dropping lo third as Morris proved to be a bit more daring by shoving his way into second. Wray remained in control to the finish to score the win followed by Morris, Holdeman and Packwood. Wray again nabbed the holeshot in the second moto, but this time Holdeman was glued to his rear fender. The two leaders immediately put time on third-place Packwood. Wray continued to set a blistering pace which was matched turn for turn by Holdeman until he threw it away by crashing near the entrance of the finish line turn. Wray enjoyed a tremendous lead and cruised to the finish wjth the overall win topping Morris, Packwood and Holdeman. Randy Danylo was unstoppable in the 125cc Intermediate class and simply walked off with both mow victories. Mike Battista was voted GFI Sportsman of the Month and was riding his debut ride in the 125cc Intermediate class, finishing a respectable third behind runner-up Jim Lavorci. Pete Marino scored a double-moto victory ·in the 250cc Beginner division one after surviving a heated battle with Ryan Banford in the opening mow. Banford, fresh out of the mini ranks, rode the 250cc machine two gears too low and revved to the point of destruction, but Marino held it together and stayed smooth for the overall win on. the night. pave Eyechaner and D.R. McCain finished inside the .top five. Results 50 FIRST TIMER I: I. Kyle Vicioso (Yam); 2. Rick Briggs (Yam); 5. Matthew Clark (Yam); 4. Brandon Currie (Sur); 5. "Flyin' " Mike Faria proved to be the top dog when he out-raced three of his Russell Racing teammates to win the Scratch main event at. Lake Perris Speedway Thursday night. For the first time in history, Russell Racing riders made up the entire Scratch main event. When they left the line, Faria jumped off the pole and into a slim lead over Bobby Schwaru, Scott Brant and Brent Werner. Schwaru, making his first appearance at Lake Perris in five weeks, opted for the dirt line. The two-time World Best-Pairs Champion stayed on the wide line all the way. He gave the entire inside to Scott Brant, and they chased Faria lap after lap. While they were not losing any ground to the National Champion, they were not picking up any either, and when the checkered flag came down, Faria had ridden his Russell Racing/ Oilzall/Shoei/A-I Plank/Event Technical Services-backed Weslake to a victory over Schwaru and Brant. Werner ended up fourth. In the eight-lap Handicap main, third-year rider Greg Appelman started on the lO-yard line and set a grueling pace over the first four laps. Veteran Shawn McConnell, making only his second Lake Perris Speedway appearance, held down the second spot. On the fifth lap, McConnell started to move in on Appelman, and by the time the white flag came out, was camped on his rear tire. Coming off the final turn, McConnell made his move. He got a big drive off the corner and pulled even with Appelman. As they crossed the checkered flag, they were elbow to elbow and McConnell took the win by a hair. As McConnell and Appelman went into turn one after the finish, they were going too fast, and tan~led. The wildest crash of the year at Lake Perns took place and both riders were down for quite some time before walking off under their own power. R.esults SCRATCH: I. Mike Faria (Wes); 2. HUNT, NY, JULY 26 Kawasaki-mounted Ed VanBallegooyen made his trip from Ontario, Canada, worthwhile by scoring wins in the 125cc Amateur and 1724 Combined classes at Hunt Moto Park, where 240 riders turned out lo compete. The track was excellent during practice and the first few mows, but a heavy downpour made conditions muddy for the later events. In the first 125cc Amateur mow VanBallegooyen jumped out to an early lead with Chris VanHyning second and Mike Latone in third. VanBallegooyen got the win with VanHyning holding onto second. VanBallegooyen also earned the second-mow win and the overall, with Latone in second. Mike Franklin led the first 17-24 Combined moto with VanBallegooyen and Tod King close behind. Their finishing order remained the same, with Franklin winning over VanBallegooyen and King. In the second mow VanBallegooyen got out front early and held on for the win over Tom Whaley. First-mow winner Franklin recovered from a bad start for third. VanBallegooyen took the overall win with Franklin second and Whaley third. Paul Austin moved to the front of the first Open Expert mow, which was run under very muddy conditions. Austin opened up a small lead and was unchallenged for the win. With the track tacking up for the second moto, Chris Pecora came away with the holeshot and opened a commanding lead over Marty Merz and Bart Lucas. Pecora looked to have the win in the bag, but with two laps to go he went down in a sweeper, handing the lead over the Men. Merz held off Lucas for the win and the overall with a 5-1 mow score_ Results P/W: I. Aaron Sheperd (Iti); 2. Mike Silverale (Yam); 5. Brad Bourne (Yam). 60: I. Jamie Robison (Kaw); 2. Cantrell/Wikoer win Hollister Marathon Motocross By J .R. Canaguier HOLLISTER, CA, AUG. 2 In the first marathon motocross to be held at Hollister, the team of Aaron Cantrell and Jake Wikoer withstood one and a half hours of-racing in temperatures over 100 degrees to win the combined 8Occ/125cc/Women race. Although the two riders took advantage of the fact that most riders chose lO ride solo as opposed to competing on teams, they were easily the fastest riders on the track, piloting their Yamaha through 41 grueling laps for the win. The 250cc bikes were next, with five twoman teams and 12 solo riders taking to the track. The team of Pat Gomm and Joey Rodriguez were unbeatable as they put in 50 laps for the overall. Glenn Zitterquist held off the team of Jeff Martinez and Richard Brendos for second, by using a strong pitstop strategy and pure endurance. The Open class kept the pits busy as eight teams chose lO switch riders, which no doub~ contributed to the fact that they averaged 40 .laps between them. The action came down
