~ LOCAL EVENTS Evans aces Huron MX ~ By Roy Knight Harvey Bouman (82) passed Alon Sahar (52) and won the Vet Noyice class at LACK. Tokarsky blasts to LACR MX'win By Greg Robertson PALMDALE, CA, JULY 31 Honda-mounted Joel Tokarsky proved you don't have to be the fastest rider on the track to wi~, just the most consistant. Tokarsky combmed two runner-up finishes to earn overall honors in the 250cc Intermediate class at California Racing Club's Friday night MX at Los Angeles County Raceway. Karl Lindstrom led the first three laps of the opening moto and was pulling away from Roy Bremenour and Tokarsky before going down and dropping to fourth. Bremenour inherited the lead' which he held until the finish. Lindstrom put on a charge that carried him all the way to Tokarsky's rear fender at the checkered flag. Moto two looked to be a repeat of the first race as Lindstrom got the holeshot and was pulling away before he crashed. Tokarsky led for the next four laps until Scott Mumford blew by on the back straight. Mumford held on for the win, but a first moto DNF left him in. fourth overall. Tokarsky kept a flying Lindstrom at. bay to finish second and first o~erall. Bremenour's 1-4 moto finishes gave him second overall edging out Lindstrom's 3-3 rides. Darin McChesnery went wire-to-wire to win the first Junior Vet Beginner moto with Kimo Ukauka close enough to be in his roost finishing second. Uksuka holeshot moto two but went down three turns into the race, dropping to last place. McChesnery's turn at the lead was shortlived, as he tangled with another rider and then went down a lap later. Both Ukauka and McChesnery sliced their way back up through the pack into first and second, respectively. McChesnery held the throttle on longer over a jump and got around Ukauka for the moto and overall win. R.esults 34 P/W MOD: J. Jerry Martinez (Yam); 2. Ray Perez (Yam); 5. M.chael Bragg (Yam). Fay was leading the rescheduled Harley Night race but had a flat r~ tire. with les~ than two 'laps to go. Stanley mherlted the lead and managed to hold off Dick's Suzuki-backed Ron YamamQto, who has also won his share of main events at the Rock this year. Heat race winners in the Junior/Expert class were Stanley, Yarnarnoto, John Clayton and John Wincewicz. Two riders from each of two semis went to the main. In semi one it was David Anderson and Del Schnitzer. Semi two saw Charlie Brown and J.P. Simonsen heading to the main. In the main event, Fay got the scratch over Stanley, Yamamoto, Joe Kopp, Don Wilson and the others. Jeff Annen moved by Anderson ~d Wilson but couldn't (!:et by Kopp. The nders strung out in a smgle file line as everyone chased Eay. Then, in turn three Fay pulled off the track and Stanley took over for the last lap and a half. Behind Stanley was Yamamoto, Kopp, Annen, Wilson 'and Wincewicz. ' There were four heat races in the Pro-Am cl~ss, and the winners. were Jeff Anderson, Jeff Rister, Jerry Brownmg and Dave Stering.· Transfering to the main event via semis were Bruce Scott, Ryan Anderson, Jay Osborne and Rusty Yamamoto, who had mechanical problems in the heat race. The main event looked like a runaway, with Stering pulling away from the pack, but Yamamoto came from a slow start to pick off everyone, including Stering in turn two of the last lap. Marthaller and Anderson baltled back and forth for most of the race, with Anderson getting the edge at the finish. Meanwhile, most of the other positions remained unchanged. At the checkered flag it was Yamamoto edging out Stering, Kopp, Rister, Browning and Rickman. R.esults 50 B: I. Larry McDonald (Yam); 2. Joshua Marthaller (Yam); 5. Kyle Dwyer (Yam). 50 A: I. HURON, CA, JULY 25 Wilson's Cycles/Malcolm Smith-backed Troy Evans dominated the Over The Hill Gang Novice class by leading both motos from start to finis.h in round foUr of the Big Guy Promouons-sponsored Summer Series, held at Huron Cycle Park. Riding a brand new Husqvarna, Evans said before the race that he felt really comfortable on the new machine. That confidence was soon evident as he grabbed the first moto holeshot .and set ~e pace. Following closely for a ~hile were Jun Terry, Randy Godich, . and Mike Hernandez. Hernandez soon passed Godich for third, 'while Evans and Terry put a considerable distance between themselves and the rest of the pack. Terry stalked Evans. for the rest of the moto, but couldn't quite catch up. Evans and Terry finished in that order with Hernandez taking third. The second moto again saw Evans grab the holeshot, this time with Hernandez running second and Danny Lowers in third. After suffering a bad start, Terry worked his way past Lowers and set his sights on Hernandez. Terry soon found a way around Hernandez and closed in on Evans. Evans kept his cool however, and stayed on the gas while Terry began to run out of steam. By the moto's end Evans had once again built up a comfortable lead and earned the overall win. Finishing in the same order as before. Terry and Hernandez earned second and third respectively. ' In the Gang's Beginner class, Tim Davis jumped to an early lead in the first moto with Eric Brandmeyer and Cory Shropshire running second and third. As the moto wore on, Brandmeyer challenged for the lead, but Davis guarded his position closely as the two went at it. Finally, just before the white flag carne out, Brandmeyer made his move and took the lead from Davis and held on to the checkered flag. . Davis holeshot the second moto. This time, Shropshire ran second and Brandmeyer was third. The three riders maintained their posi~ions to the finish, ~ith Shropshire holding off Brandmeyer while Davis went on to claim the moto and overall wins. Brandmeyer's 1-3 finishes gave him second overall with Shropshire t h i r d . . ' SLO CIty Cycles-supported Roy Knight ea.rned the oyerall in the Gang's Expert class wIth two fusts over rival Glen Wilkins. Although Knight passed Wilkins early in both motos, the holeshot specialist stayed glued to Knight's rear fender the whole time and almost got by Knight on the front straightaway as the two dashed toward the checkered flag in the final moto. Mike Bosworth still smarting from a recent crash at Mam~oth Mountain, could fare no better than third overall, just edging out Bob Clark in the second moto. Results 60: J. David Booth (Hon); 2. Sober SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JULY 29 Bobby "Bo.ogaloo" Schwartz treated a rowdy near-capaaty crowd of 3200 to a classic comefrom-behind Scratch main victory over Gary Hicks. Schwartz' performance was almost matched by Rus~ell Racing speedster Scott B~ant, WI;lO dommated. the eight-rider Handicap mam to score an unpressive win. Hicks s~rted out on the right foot in the S~t~ malO. He drew the inside-pole starting poslUon, and followed that up with a quick gate that propelled him immediately to the front spot. Schwartz, who drew lane assignment two on .the immediate right of Hicks, also got a qUIck start, but found himself in second place looking for a way around the 23-year-old. Sl;hwartz initially 'tried the inside line, but found Hicks stubbornly covering the bottom half. Schwartz changed his angle to attack, gaining precious real estate on the leader by going deep into each turn and looking for the added traction that would launch him down the next straightaway. For three laps Schwartz poked his front wheel up even with Hicks' rear tire, but each time Hicks held onto the lead. As the' two veterans passed the white flag, Schwartz pu~led out the stops and brought the crowd to ItS feet when he passed .HickS out of turn two. The startled Hicks attempted to take the lead back, but ran out of race and had to settle . for a close second. In the Handicap main "Suicide" Scott Brant put on a dazzljng display. Just as northern California's Bobby Hedden was gomg around initial race leader Carlos Cardona, Brant overtook the entire contingent of front-runners from his extreme outside line. Results SCRATCH: I.
