and forth between them, but it was Hodges, taking the win and overall. In other classes, experts Rodney Carrier, Jim Krause and Henry Weir put on a real show, as the trio sped over the track in the 125cc A class. Carrier led throughout and scored the win. The 250cc Beginner class raced with the 125cc A class in a staggered start. Racers were competing with each other all over the track, as they struggled to gain position. Fonzo Stanley Jr. ended up racing his Yamaha to victory in the highly competitive class. In the Open Amateur class, Bill Hastings got the holeshot in both motos and led throughout with David Gordon in hot pursuit all the way. The race was fast paced with only a few seconds between winner Hastings and runner-up Gordon. Results 50+: 1. Mitch Keller (Kaw); 2. David Gordon (Hon); 5. Tony Smith (Kaw); 4. Perry prevails at Portland MX By Don Schneider PORTLAND, OR, JULY 16 Round 12 of the Motocross Northwestsanctioned Thursday Night Series at Portland International Raceway saw Mike Perry take both moto wins in the combined Old Timer ExpertlAmaturelNovice class. In moto one, Perry gated perfectly. Roundin~ the first turn, he had Jim Lamkin and MIke Hickman a couple of bike-lengths behind. Perry opened a comfortable lead halfway into lap one and left Lamkin and Hickman to battle together, but by lap two, Lamkin had pulled away from Hickman. . At the end of lap three Lamkin was within three seconds of Perry. The two front-runners waged war for the rest of the moto, with Perry prevailing for a close moto win: Moto two saw a turn of events as Hickman grabbed the best traction out of the gate. Heading around the second turn, it was Lamkin in second, holding off amateurs Terry Hamness and Milt Harden. Perry, starting in fifth, had his work cut out for him. Failing to get by Harden on the first lap cost him valuable time, but as they headed into lap two, Perry flew to the inside of a corner and pushed Harden .wide to garner fourth position. Perry then doubled past Hamness lor third, five seconds behind Lamkin. At the end of lap two, Hickman went to the outside of some lappers as Lamkin powered up the inside. Lamkin had the better line for a 50-foot tabletop, and made the pass. Perry was right behind Hickman, and soon passed him for second. On the final lap the two front-runners hit back-markers again. As they came into a tight turn, Perry nailed the inside berm, while Lamkin swept to the outside. They exited side by side, and went over the tabletop together. Perry landed first and made the next righthander just ahead of Lamkin for the lead. Perry crossed the checkers inches ahead of Lamkin for the overall, with Lamkm earmng second. The Up The Hill class was won by Grayson Hart. In moto one Hart was on the gas early on, taking the holeshot. Monte Hill, who was running second, crashed hard on lap two. Don Boespflug and Eric Hall took advantage and netted seCORd and third, respectively. . Hill took the moto two holeshot ahead of Hall, Boespflug, Hart and Kip Templeton. Hart was on the gas, sweeping by Boespflug and then moving into second at the start of . lap two. Boespflug dogged Hall for the first three laps, but failed to find a way around. Midway through the moto, Hart motored by Hill for the lead. On the final lap, Hill was railing the outside of a right-hander when he went off the track. Boespflug was there to make the pass, and Hall also tried to squeeze inside, but Hill held him off. At the checkers, Hart prevailed for the win, finishing up four seconds on Boespflug and Hill. Brown bags Lawrenceburg Speedway wins By Kevin George LAWRENCEBURG, IN, JULY 3 , Scotty Brown dominated the Scratch main in Lawrenceburg, but it took a last-lap move to put him up front in the three-lap Handicap final. Brown guaranteed himself a spot in the Scratch main with a heat win over Pat Burle and Pat Reynolds as well as brother Kim Brown. Brian Daily sewed up spot number two with a heat win over Tom Hensler, Mark Maurer and J(urt Cerwinsky. The last chance qualifier filled the' two' remainin~ spots with Burle and Hensler. Brown cruised to the main event win, with Daily passing both Burle and Hensler to earn second. Kim Brown won the consi, with Reynolds second and Maurer third. Cerwinsky brought the large crowd to its feet when he hit the backstraight fence, crashed, and watched as his bike continued on without him directly into the infield pond. Hensler looked to be on his way to a Handicap win until Brown worked his way up from the 70-yard line for a late pass for the win in the evening's final event. Results SCRATCH: 1. ScOlly Brown; 2. Frey took the holeshot and hung tenaciously to the lead despite Lan~land's efforts to get by him. Langland was m turn 'being hounded by Tim Gregory, Tim lemanovic and Tim McBride. On lap six, Langland got by Frey and lemanovic grabbed third from Gregory. On the final lap, Zemanovic passed Frey to snatch second at the checkers. Langland had a much easier time of it in the combined 125/250cc DTX event. He settled into first after out-dragging Zemanovic to the first corner, and held his lead to the finish. Todd Johnson won the 125ccc1ass with Fred Thorston in second. ./ Results OPEN PRO: I. Peter Hook (RlX); 2. Bill Hofmeister (RlX); 5. Verdeen Langland (Hon); 4. Bradley Frey (Yam); 5. By Jack Hanson MONTGOMERY, MN; JULY 11 Peter Hook led the first seven and the last two laps of the 15-lap AMA-sanctioned Open Pro main event to win first-place money on the clay oval at Montgomery Speedway. Hook put his Donahue H-D Rotax into the first corner ahead of Verdeen' Langland and Bill Hofmeister, who was followed by Randy Triplett and Eric Brouhard. On lap seven, Kurt Boehlke put his bike ahead of Brouhard, while HofmeIster wrestled second from Langland and set after Hook. On lap nine Hook slid high, allowing HQfmeister to grab the lead and hold it until lap 14, when Hook used his patented high line to retake the lead and win going away. Earlier, Langland had swept both smallbore main events aboard his Motion Prosponsored Kawasaki. In the 250cc Flat Track fmal, he waged war with surprising novice Mellor manhandles Carlsbad MX By Dave Burgess CARLSBAD, CA, JULY 1l Tom Mellor proved that patience pays off, as he battled back to win the second and decisive moto in the 250cc Junior class to score the overall victory at Racmg Enterprises' Saturday Motocross at Carlsbad Raceway. The 250s and 500s were combined, and it was Tony Caliger on his 500cc Honda grabbing the holeshot in the first mow. Right behind Caliger was Beau Willette and Mellor. Caliger's Honda proved to be a formitable challenge to get around and the first to do ·so was Willette. This move proved to be a crucial one. With Caliger between Mellor and Willette, it allowed Willette to slip away. Moving into third was Jeff Scott wi th Dr. Gary DeForest in fourth. Scott closed in on Mellor but couldn't put up any challenge for second. Willette took the moto win over Mellor and Scott. Caliger easily outdistanced the second place 500cc Junior John Tookey. The second moto looked like a carbon copy of the first, with qtli~er leading the way into the first turn. ThIS ume Mellor was hot on his heels and knew that he would have to get around him soon or tire out. Mellor made· his move on the inside of Caliger, and it was now Willette's turn to hopelessly watch, as Mellor slipped away' for the moto win and the overall. At the start of the first 125cc Junior race, Joshua Amaradio was so excited about his holeshot that he turned left, instead of right at the first turn and headed down the track in the wrong direction. Course workers quickly alerted'him of his mistake and he turned around and sped off after the pack. Leading the way was JustinJ...usian, with Milano Schaeffer in tow. Within three laps Amaradio was nipring at Daeron Stidman's heels at the back 0 the pack. Amaradio shot past Stidman and Schaeffer a short time later. Lusian was cruismg out in front unaware that Amaradio had a head of steam going and was coming up on him at a rapid rate. As the white flag flew the two riders were no more than a bike length apart. Amaradio tried to make an all-or-nothirIg pass going into the turn before the finish and his speed was too great, and his front end washed out. Amaradio was up quickly but not in time to make a challenge. LUSIan took the win followed by Amaradio and Schaeffer. Moto two was quite different. Amaradio saw nothing but open track from the drop of the gate to the waving. of the checkered flag. Lusian held on for second with Schaeffer finishing third. Results 80 'BEG: I. Rick Cha
