Hough handles Second Creek RR By David Lucas DENVER, CO, JULY 19 Don Hough won the Open Superbike class during the MOlOrcycle, Roadracing Association's sixth race of the season at Second Creek Raceway. Hough had unofficially tiptoed under the track record during testing on the previous day, and exciting things were expected for the actual competition. .Hough led the field £0 the first corner in the Open Superbike class and began to pull away from the pack, clocking a one-minute, 11.18-second lap two. Mark Schellinger and Jason Curran fought for second place until Schellinger maneuvered under Curran and permanently took over second. As the GTO class left the line, Dan Turner and Don Hough launched side by side and stayed that way until turn two. Behind them, Dennis Burke led Mike Surratt. The first six bikes completed lap one with one second separating them. The completion of lap three saw Hough post a new record time of 1.11.13. Turner entered turn two too fast, and suffered a low-velocity get-off against the tire wall. . With Turner out, Hough backed off and cruised £0 the finish. Attention turned from the front to the battle for the second spot. Burke was joined by Robert Wright and despite a final-corner effort by Wright, Burke held on for second. The closest event of the day was in the Heavyweight Superbike class. Randy Kirschbaum's GSXR balked at the start and the grid swept past as he waved a warning. Mike Surratt arrived at the corner first, followed by Bryan Balkema, Scott Baily and Frank Cowgill. Over the next three laps, Surratt motored away from Balkema, who in turn left the fight for third to Terry Harnish, Baily and Cowgill. Dirp.ick had started poorly, but moved up to pass Harnish and Balkema, and set out after Surratt. Within two laps a battle mounted between Surratt and Dimick. Dimick out-drove Surratt exiting the corner onto the front straight. With the first three posilOns more or less settled, Harnish and Cowgill hammered for fourth. - Harnish picked an outside line on the tightest corner and displaced Cowgill, whose struggles continued as Jon Terry and Aaron Merriman both bumped him back. The final lap saw a tight battle for third position. Harnish had pulled up £0 Balkema and was trying to pass, but Balkema held third to'the line. In the Middleweight Superbike race, Dimick seized the lead at the green and was never challenged. Nobody was able to match his pace, so the crowd's attention turned to the trailing positions, where Mark Schellin~er held second place. After a long dice With Robin Holliday, Schellinger finished the race in second, while Terry Harnish was displaced £0 fourth after running in second place early on. Holliday claimed third spot. AUBURN, CA, JULY 17 The 'second annual Civil War of Speedway was held before an enthusiastic sellout crowd of 3,600 at nortnern California's Gold Country Speedway, where Mike Faria led the southern team to a decisive 49-29 win. The event pits the top southern California riders against the best riders in the northern half of the state, and a European format is used to decide the best team. Each squad sends two riders out for each race, and the riders' individual points are combined and added to determine the teams' total. The seven-man team with the most points at the end of the 13 heats is the winner. The opening heat featured local number one Bart Bast, while the south countered with Mike Faria, and the two veterans locked up in a 'battle that brought the crowd to its feet. Faria was out-gated, but rode the outside dirt to pull off the winning pass with less than a lap to go. Mike Parson finished third for the south and the score was tied at three. . The south also won heat two as Gary Hicks and Charlie Venegas ga'le the team its first sweep, but the north countered with a win in the third heat by Jimmie Sisemore, who went wire to wire. The northern squad gained more ground as Alan Christian won the next race, and the score stood at 13-11, with the south on top. Faria made his second appearance of the night a successful one for the south, as. he and teammate Brent Warner took the top two spots in the fifth ·race. Venegas and Bobby Schwartz made it three wins in a .row for the south, as they topped the next two events, but Robert Curry ended the northern drought, as he won the eighth heat over Venegas, who was inserted as a lastminute replacement for Hicks, when the latter suffered mechanical ills. The south now led, 30-18. Sisemore came back with a vengeanc;e from a disappointing second ride to win Ihe next event, but the south countered with Schwartz and Scott Brant, who took the top twO positions in the 10th race. The 10th heat of the night saw Faria win again for the south, while a frustrated Alan Christian was disqualified when he took out Faria, who was celebrating his success and entertaining the appreciative fans with a wheelie display. The south led by a score of 43-23, which was enough to clinch the win, but the north fought gamely on. Bast won heat 12 for the north, notching his first victory of the evening, but Faria ended the night on a winning note for his southern squad by topping the last event. The final score was 45-27, with the south handily defeating the team from the north.. A traditional Scratch main was also held in addition to the team competition. Pfetzing and Christian transferred in the first heat, while Schwartz and Hicks triumphed over a disappointed Bast and Curry. Mike Parsons won the third heat ahead of Brent Werner, and Faria continued his perfect day by dominating heat three. To the disapproval of the crowd, who felt that Werner had won, Brant was awarded the final transfer -spot of the night in the fourth heat. In the first semi, Pfetzing and Schwartz got the main event transfer spots, and the north's final hopes for a.representative in the main were dashed when Hicks and Faria got the final transfer spots. The victory in the all-southern California main went to an ecstatic Hicks, who narrowly edged Faria at the line. Rutherford rips to Cycleland Motocross win . By Michael Rich CHICO, CA, JULY 17 Honda-mounted Danny Rutherford had his work cut out for him as he came from behind to secure wins in both motos of the 125cc Junior race at Chico's Cycleland Speedway. Scott Davis blasted out of the gate ahead of Mike Lopez and lack Schwatka at'the start 'of the first moto. Rutherford gated midpack, but was quickly up to fourth and pressuring Schwatka for third. As the riders finished the first lap, Lopez went down over a jump, moving Schwatka to second and Rutherford to third. Rutherford dove under Schwatka as the two Tiders approached the double, and was able to take second in the air. By this time, Davis had opened up a substantial lead. Slowly but surely, Rutherford began to reel in the leader. With just two laps remaining, Rutherford moved in on Davis and was able to out-jump him over the tabletop. Once in the lead, Rutherford rode to an easy win, followed by Davis and Schwatka. Lopei was able to remount and work his way to fourth by the finish. In the second moto, it was Schwatka stealing the holeshot ahead of Lopez and Rutherford. Lopez' stay in second lasted as far as the second jump, where his Kawasaki kicked sideways and threw him to the ground and out of the race. With Lopez out of the way, Rutherford had a clear shot at Schwatka. Rutherford took his time and set Schwatka up for a pass in the rockers. Using a smoother line, Rutherford motored past and into the lead. . Davis had moved up to join the leaders by this time, and by mldrace, was park'ed on Schwatka's rear fender. When Schwatka went wide in Ihe turn before the tabletop, Davis . made his move and took 'over second. With time running o'ut, Davis was able to close on Rutherford, but was unable to pass before the finish. Rutherford notched the win and the overall, while Davis settled for second in the moto and se~ond overall. In 125cc Novice action, there was a dogfight between Dylan Blackwell and Mark Cooper for the overall. Blackwell took the lead in the first moto, only to be passed by Cooper at the end of the first lap. Within two laps Blackwell was back in front, having outjumped Cooper over the doubles. Unhappy with second, Cooper repassed Blackwell over the tabletop. Blackwell got a better drive in the corner before Ihe finish line jump, and -was able to win by just inches. In the second moto, Cooper looked like he was going to steal the overall by running away from Blackwell, but as the race neared its conclusion, Blackwell closed on Cooper and pulled off the pass on the last lap to earn the win and the overall. Cooper hling on for second ahead of Darryl Wahl. Results I Results FINAL POINTS: I. SOUTHERN CALIF 49. (Mike Faria 12.
