RIDGECREST, CA, JULY 12 National Hare &: Hound Champion Danny Hamel blazed to it victory in the Open Expert division at the Ridgecrest M.C. European Scrambles. . Hamel and Ted Hunnicutt were side by side at the bomb, with Hamel edging Hunnicutt over the first rise. At the end of the first lap Hamel held a slight lead over Hunnicutt. Robert Laughlin was in third and Don Griewe had pushed his big Husqvarna four-stroke into fourth place. Hamel came through on the second lap alone in .first, but the rest of the pack was still fighting over every position. Laughlin inherited second, closely followed by Griewe. Todd Hoy had also moved up one position to fourth, while Hunnicutt was falling back with suspension problems. Bill Fullmer got by Hunnicutt, who was in the pits examining his shock. He decided to continue, and the crowd was treated to a spectacular swap as he powered out of the pits_ On lap three Hamel and Laughlin came through in their expected positions, while Hoy had moved up to third. Griewe had overheated and had to get immediate attention from his pit crew. While Griewe was shedding his clothes, Hunnicutt chased Fullmer through the start/finish. Hunnicutt got lots of air over the finish-line jump and somehow managed to save it despite his suspension problems. Griewe recovered and stormed off after losing only two p?sitions_ Hamel finished with a comfortable lead over Laughlin and Hoy, but the race for fourth was close until the finish. Hunnicutt made two last-ditch efforts 10 pass Fullmer within view of the crowd, but the Honda XR600 rider held him off for fourth overall. The 125cc Expert race was won by Jeff Capt after a hard-fought battle with John Braasch. A~ter two laps the race was led by Braasch, WIth Capt close behind. The pair were followed by Jason Ingersoll, but they put time on him during lap three. Braasch was in a dogfight with Capt for the lead on lap four, when he crashed into a lappeT. Capt inherited the lead, which he held 10 the fimsh. Braasch maintained second place, while Ingersoll was a distant third. Danny Hamel topped the Open Experts at the Ridgcrest M.C. Euro Scrambles. , 500 JR: I. Tony Caliger (Hon); 2. LACR MX win to Huey By Greg Robertson 28 PALMDALE, CA, JULY 17 ,Consistency paid off for Karl Huey as he captured the overall win in the 125cc Beginner class without winning a moto at the California Racing Club's Friday night motocross, held at Los Angeles County Raceway. Josh Jenkins led the first lap of molO one before Scott Hendricks shot past for a lead he neVer relinquished. Huey and Vito Valenti closed in on Jenkins with Huey able to make the pass for second place. Jenkins held off Valenti for third at the checkered flag. Mark Libardoni went wire to wire for the second molO win. Henqricks gated fourth and quickly moved up to second to pressure Libardoni. Hendricks closed in to make the pass but had his front end wash out in the sand and dropped to sixth. Valep.ti and Huey gated poorly and diced their way though the entire pack. Valenti held -off Huey by just inches at the finish for second place, but it was Huey.'s 2-3 score that earned him a firstplace trophy. Hendricks's 1-4 finishes edged out Libardoni's 5-1 performance for second overall. Tom Miller jumped out to an immediate lead in the first Vet Beginner moto. Sean Hudson zeroed in on Miller and made the pass for the lead on the third lap. Miller got on the main jet and repassed Hudson and pulled away to a IO-second lead at the finish. Hudson was second over Kelly Nogy and Bruce Hathaway. Tim Mendenhall holeshot mota two, but Nogy was leading by the end of the first lap. Mendenhall fell and eventually finished fourth. Hudson was on the, gas and moved from last 10 fifth by the fourth lap. Nogy was cruising out· front, while Kurk Lukrofka was second and feeling pressure from Hathaway and Miller. With two laps remaining,- Hathaway went down and Miller slipped by Lukrofka for secoQd. Miller caught Nogy but couldn't find daylight and settled for second· in the moto, which was good enough for the overall win. . Karl Lindstrom won two hard-fought battles to claim overall honors in the 250cc Intermediate class. Bob Phillips started attacking Lindstrom halfway through moto one and \Vouldn't let up. Lindstrom won the race by inches over Phillips. Frankie Sottile and Roy Bremenour went at it for third place all the way 10 the finish, with &ottile 'getting the nod by a wheel. Bremenour was out front for the first three laps of molO two before Lindstrom stuffed him coming out of a turn for the lead. Lindstrom won the molO, but Bremenour kept him honest the entire race. Sottile held off Phillips for third in the moto and'third overall. Results PIW A: l. Jason Ciarletta (Yam); 2. James Thompson (Yam); !. Michael Bragg (Yam). P/W B-1: l. Eric Durrer (Yam); 2. Kent hauls at Bridgehampton RR By Jim Fassino BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY, JULY 4-5 Brian Kent overcame wet race conditions to win four races in round two of the GP/PRO Series at Bridgehampton. . Known as an outstanding rain rider, Kent ran away and hid in Saturday's rainy Middleweight Superbike race, riding his Parkways Cycle/Vanson Leathers/Spectro/Supertrick/ Competition Cowlings/Fog City/Str~t and Competition/Michelin-sponsored Honda. Junior riders Charles Rosaly and Eric Gulbransen worked their way up from the second wave to pass all the experts except Kent, to finish second and third overall. Behind them, John Steigerwald nipped Steve Nogueira at the end for second in the Expert category. For Sunday's Unlimited Supersport money ra.ce, the weather improved slightly, but was sull far from perfect. The start saw Suzukimounted Andy Detherage grab the early lead, but ~ent ~as never far behind. Gradually workmg hiS way up to Detherage's tail, Kent drafted by in the fast turn one of the final lap. Detherage made a last attempt for the l~d exiting tum .12, but Kent held on by two bike lengths to wm. . Kent later cruised unmolested to the win in the Unlimited Production class, after a racelong, three-way battle that saw Eric Wood finish second ahead of Chris Bellisimo and Steve Moriarty, who rode injured. Back on his 600cc, Kent got into a dice with Steve Nogueira in the Middleweight Supersport race. Each lap, Kent would make an inside move in turn eight, but Nogueira would get the better drive out of 12 and draft by at the finish line. This went on for the entire race, but on the final circuit, Nogueira came up short as Kent won by less than a bike length. Results LlW S/SPRT EX: I. Brell Meuger (Yam); 2. Andrew Slater (Yam); !.
