Gallo gasses it to Perris
Motocross victory
By Tony Alessi
PERRIS, CA, JULY 18
Chris Gallo won three of four motos en 'route
to victories in the 250cc Beginner division two
and 25-29 Beginner division one classes during
the GFI Win a Truck Night Series, held at
Perris Raceway.
.
Gallo set the pace in the first 250cc Beginner
race, and was never seriously challenged
during the moto. Mike Barney and Tom
Butler battled early in the moto for second,
with Butler eventually crashing out and
movip.g Deshane to third. Deshane closed the
gap on Barney with one lap remaining, and
sparks flew as they faught for the position.
Deshane's persistence paid off with a last-lap
pass that earned him second place in front
of Barney, Larson and Joe Heffernan.
The second moto saw Johnny Aragon,
Heffernan and Gallo engage in a three-way
battle for the lead. Aragon faded off the pace,
setting the stage for a moto-Iong duel between
Heffernan and Gallo. Heffernan held on for
. the moto win, but Gallo earned overall honors
on the night, since Heffernan finished fifth
in the first moto.
Gallo returned later to dominate both motos
of the 25-29 Beginner division one class,
topping Don Lourenco, Edmondson and Tim
Williams.
,
Travis King aced both motos of the 25-29
Beginner division two class after pulling clear
of an early-race battle between Scott Larson,
Mark Sherwood and Tony Bandiera. King also
went on to win both 250cc Beginner division
one motos over Dr. McCain and Mike Mullen.
The Vet Novice class saw the return of Lou
Soto as he busted out of the gate and into
the top three in the opening moto. Soto battled
hard, but would finish behind Todd Varble
and moto winner Kayle Homberg.
The second moto was a showdown between
Holland and Soto, with Holland winning,
Soto settling for second, and Homberg
claiming third.

Brandes sweeps Riverfront MX
By John Silva
MARYSVILLE, CA, JULY 18
Michael Brandes scored four moto wins on
his way to victory in both the 125 and 250cc
Pro classes at the Riverfront Motocross.
The 250cc Pro class featured a talented and
surprisingly large field. Scott McElroy was
9Ulck off the gate and held the lead for the
fust lap, ahead of Brandes, Ron Allen and
John Stark. Brandes moved past McElroy early
• in the second lap, and Brandes, McElroy,
Allen and Stark began to pull away from the
field. At midrace, Shane Esposito charged up
from midpack to dispatch both Stark and
Allen and assume third place. Esposito was
clearly on a roll in the final laps, closing on
the leaders until time ran out. The checkered
flag went to Brandes, with McElroy a close
second.
Dave Kopels grabbed the holeshot in moto
two, and held a narrow lead over Brandes and
Stark. Stark had his hands full fighting off
McElroy, while Brandes and· Kopels also
battled side by side. By lap five Brandes had
a firm grip on first place, while McElroy
slipped by Stark to grab third. The race
concluded with Brandes cruising in for first
and Kopels finishing second.
The fans lined the fences as the 125cc Pro
and Intermediate classes gated for their first
moto. From the start through the first few
turns, the Pros were too closely bunched for
a leader to be picked, but Brandes pulled into
first ahead of McElroy as they went over the
tabletop. McElroy stayed close, followed by
Esposito, Chris Barker and Eric Ducray.
Meanwhile, Intermediate riders Derek Watkins and Justin Tiearney were busy fighting
for the lead in their class. Watkins held a small
advantage over Tiearney to the end. Brandes
led the Pro class for the last half of the moto,
and notched anoilier mow win over McElroy
and Esposito.
In moto two, Brandes holeshot the start and
never looked back. McElroy rode well, but had
to settle for second again, while in the
Intermediate class, it was Tiearney with a
narrow win over Watkins to earn first overall.

Time Motocross, easily scoring the overall wins in three separate categories.
holeshot and leading Freddie Mitchell for
three of the five laps before Mitchell secured
the lead. Billy Ackers had a terrible start,
rounding lap one in eighth place, but he'
worked his way through the pack; finally
passing Andy Bebee for third on the last lap.
Brassfield holeshot again and led Mitchell
for the first two laps. Ackers climbed to second
place behind Brassfield by the end of lap two
and held it until lap three when Brassfield's
KX seized. Mitchell slid around Ackers and
into the lead, keeping Ackers in second spot
all the way to the checkered flag.
The Mini Senior (14-15) Stock category saw
Brad Woolsey lead Kevin Windham in the fust
moto. Billy Gartman was close behind, but
Woolsey led both Windham and Gartman
from the first lap to the checkered flag.
Windham holeshot moto two and led
Woolsey, who held second position for two
laps before Gartman got by. Windham stayed
ahead of Gartman for the moto and overall
wins.
