West scores LACR MX win By Scott Hoffman PALMDALE, CA, JULY 5 The fireworks were over but the heat was still intense as young Ricky West captured the overall victory in the Pee Wee B-1 class during California Racing Club's motocross at Los Angeles County Raceway. Anthony Barbacovi grabbed the first moto holeshot with Nathan Pamintuan and Kyle Barden close behind. Action was mild during the opening laps, but on lap three riders started swapping positions. Early-race leader Barbacovi encountered trouble and quickly dropped back to fourth. Pamintuan jumped into the lead while West charged through the pack. By the last lap, West had worked his way up to second behind Pamintuan. At the finish, it was Pamintuan across first with West second, and Barbacovi rounding out the top three after Barden dropped back to fifth on the last lap. In moto two, West did. not waste time, as he pulled the holeshot and led the race from start to finish. Blake Mitchell put on an impressive ride in moto two, as he ran second after lap one and held off the competition to the end. First-moto winer Pamintuan and Barbacovi ran third ang fourth, respectively, until lap four when Barbacovi passed Pamintuan and held third 'to the finish. Shawn O'Brien dominated the 125cc Novice class with a set of wire-to-wire wins. Fred Ogrim grabbed second overall honors with solid third and fourth place finishes. Results P/W A: 1. The 23 Pro-Am riders were divided into three heats with the wins going to Hacker, Buchanan and Shawn Clark. At the start of Jim Sendelb~ch was the Vet Expert class winner at L.A. County Raceway. the final, those three quickly put some distance on the remainder of the field, led by Jesus Crawford, Jack. Franklin and Eddie Hidden. While Hacker was pressuring Buchanan for the lead, Buchanan got a little high coming off the first turn, tapping a hay bale slightly, letting Hacker into the lead on the third lap. Hidden and Franklin got into a battle for fifth, then fourth when Buchanan dropped out on the fifth lap. With the top three on autopilot, Todd Hunter moved up w pressure Franklin for the fifth spot, taking it on the eighth lap when Franklin drifted a little high off the second turn. The 12 Juniors were divided into two heats that went to the' Hart brothers. At the start, James was first out of the second turn, with Bill Newkirk, Kevin Varnes and Jess Roeder bunched closely behind. Roeder took over second, as they went down the back straight on the second lap. After a slow start, Roy Hart took over third, passing Newkirk on the outside of the second turn on the fourth lap and moved in to challenge Roeder for second, while Varnes began challenging Newkirk for fourth. Roy Hart finally got under Roeder as they came off the second turn on the eighth lap, while Varnes took fourth at about the same time. The 22 Experts were grouped into three heats, with three transfering to the final, and the remaining running a somewhat unpopular. semi for the last three spots. Heat wins went to Jason Fletcher over Rodney Farris and Ricky Graham; Steve Morehead easily taking his heat after one of the top qualifiers, Rusty Rogers crashed hard entering the first turn. Dan Ingram took the last heat over Roeder and Larry Pegram. Kris Kiser took the semi. The first two starts were red-flagged for riders jumping the start, most of the remainders were for downed riders. In all the starts, it seemed like just about every rider was close to the front, or rear also depending upon which start. On the start that was finally the good one, Roeder grabbed the lead from Kiser, Dan Ingram and Randy Texter. On about the fifth lap, both Fletcher and Rodney Farris got by Texter with Fletcher moving up to pressure Ingram for third and in the process they moved up to the rear of Kiser. While it stayed close to the end, the top six stayed the same to the end, one hour after they first received the green flag. Results PRO-AM: 1. Mike Hacker (Rrx); 2. Shawn Clark (Rrx); 3. Mike Faria continued to display the style and speed that has endeared him in the hearts of southern California speedway fans everywhere. Faria's latest conquest came at the Orange County Fairgrounds' annual Coors Light Fair Derby. Faria was undefeated in five Scratch rides, including the four rider/four lap Scratch main 'where .!I$-pr~vailed over Shawn McConnell, Andy Northrup and Gary Hicks. An eight rider/eight lap Handicap main event was also staged with former northern California .wildman Charlie Venegas finishing On top. Rounding out the night's winners was ·Speedway's only current female rider, 15-yearold Ansela Hale, who took home the honors in the fust division Junior Scratch main. The sidecars were also on hand and their main event win was the ownership of the Ross Millar/Dale Leeder team. Faria, who hails from Colton, California, rode his Russell Racing/A-I Plank/Shoei HelmetlOilzall-backed Weslake to perfection in the opening three qualifying heats. Coming out of lane two twice, and from the pole once Faria mana~ed to beat all comers, including former Natlonal Speedway Champion Brad Oxley, Andy Northrup, Chris Manchester, Scott Brant and Lance King_ The initial attempt to wrap up the night's proceedings ended with Gary Hicks and Shawn McConnell going down in an ugly heap near the first turn pit gate. The Scratch .mam was red-flagged and restarted with no exclusions. The restart began just as the original attempt had, with Faria taking the first lead and parlaying it into a comfortable lead that was never in jeopardy. Hicks made the only serious challenge to Faria's lead but put any chance of snealQng into the lead aside, as he had nowhere to go in the first turn and ended up sprawled in the deep dirt. Charlie Venagas took advantage of some questionable Handicap yardage placement to walk away with the Handicap eight-lap main event win. Typically, Venegas starts on the 4O-yard line, however, for the Fair Derby he was told to run off the 30. Twenty-yarders Mike Dalbey and Jesse Ochoa set the early pace, however, both participants were down and out before two full laps were in the books. The failure of the two low-yardage riders to remain in the race allowed Ve!legas to seize a generous portion of the lead early and establish a lead that neither Gary Hicks, who finished second, or third-place finisher Robert Pfetzing, could put a dent in. Sidecar racing at promoter Harry Oxley's tiny Orange County track always seems just a short step shy of total chaos and the Fair Derby main would prove to be no exception, as the teams of Joe Petraglovic/Alan Bilger, Peter Lewis/Jamie Macy, Kenny McIntyre/ Mickey Faust and Ross Millar/Dale Leeder all occupied the lead position at one time or another before the checkered £lag finally came out to signal Millar/Leeder the winner by less than a front tire length margin over McIntyre/ Faust. 33
