Kenneth in tow. After the first lap it was apparent that these two 125s pilots were the fastest riders on the track. Keith Peel now had the overall lead on his ATK with Kraus close behind. Scott Reed was in third overall from a third wave start and closing rapidly on the leaders. The 25"Occ class race was heating up as Mike Carter, Rob "Flash" Gladden, and Eddie "Comeback" Pratt were after Krause. On the next lap Reed made the charge that sent him into the overall lead not to be challenged again. His brother was having a little tougher time. passing through the 250s till Kraus collided with the ground ending his day and allowing Kenneth Reed into second overall. Carter now had the 250cc class lead in third overall with a comfortable lead over Gladden and Pratt who were swapping for second. Keith Peel had slipped back in the overall but held a comfortable lead over his class. As the race progressed the only problem for the Reeds was their father being able to keep enough water to pour down their backs at the pits stops, which were becoming more frequent as the race wore on. Reed continued on to take the win with a sizeable lead over brother Kenneth who closed the gap almost 20 seconds in the lead of the 250cc class followed by Gladden and Pratt with Peel finishing in the lead of the Open class. tN Results U/CLFD: I. Lopez leap's to Cydeland MX win By Michael Rich CHICO, CA, JULY 10 Kawasaki-mounted Mike Lopez came' from behind in both motos to beat some stiff competition and win the 125cc Novice class at Chico's Cycleland Speedway. Brian Roberts blasted off the line to assume the early lead at the start of the first moLO. Danny Rutherford and Mike Lopez followed in close order. Lopez forced his way past Rutherford on ~e back straight, only to be repassed as the duo entered the stadium portion of the track. Rutherford jammed inside of Roberts, only to be pushed back to second over the following double. Rutherford hung onto Roberts' rear fender, but was unable to pull off the pass for the lead. Things changed dramatically on the third lap when Rutherford and Roberts collided momentarily, allowing Lopez LO shoot through for the lead. Roberts' bike was damaged in the collision and he was forced to retire for the night. Rutherford refused to accept second, and he quickly closed on Lopez and looked ready to make the pass as he entered the rockers. Rutherford, however, lost his rhythm and went over -the bars. With Rutherford down, Justin Brown and Dylan Blackwell moved into second and third, respectively. At the finish, Lopez took the win followed by Brown and Blackwell. Rutherford remounted and crossed the line fourth: Brian Barrington, who had missed the start of the first moto, stole the holeshot at the beginning of the second moto. Rutherford and Blackwell were in hot pursuit. Lopez started outside the top five but made time on the leaders in every turn. On the second lap, Barrington went down in the rockers, and allowed Rutherford to assume the lead. Within half a lap, Lopez had moved through the pack and was pressing Rutherford for first. Lopez forced his way inside of Rutherford in the turn before the doubles and then out-jumped Rutherford to assume the lead. Lopez was able to maintain his lead to the checkered flag: Rutherford finished in second for second overall. Results P/W: I. Daniel Fowler (Yam); 2.Brandon Boyd (Yam); 3. Andy Morgan (Yam). 60: I. Mark Faria (right) took the low line en route to the Scratch main win at Glen Helen, while Charlie Venegas (left) finished third. Faria placed second in the Handicap. Bozarth blasts Portland MX By Don Schneider . PORTLAND, OR, JULY 9 Rick Bozarth made haste of his competitors in the Vintage class at the regular Thursday night motocross, held at Portland International Raceway. Bozarth showed up on a 1973 Husqvarna CR400 and pulled the holeshot down the 110yard start straight in moto one. Dave Eakin was hot on his tail on a '75 Honda Elsinore 125. Pat Muxlow was tearing it up on a newer, '74 Honda Elsinore in third. Rounding tum one, Stan Capps, aboard a '74 Husky CR400 had Don Bisceglia screaming to get out of the way. Bisceglia was hard on the gas and overshot turn one. "Man this baby hardly has any brakes compared to my '92 RM250," said Bisceglia. Scott Allen was trying to make up ground in sixth, after getting stuck in the gate.. "The clutch was a little quick releasing and I just dropped it," said Capps. Heading up the hill section on lap one, Bisceglia was on the move and sat in second. Eakin was charging just as hard and was pushing Bozarth. On lap two, Eakin was dogging Bozarth in a left-hander and tried slamming a berm on the outside. The result was a derailed chain. Allen had begun his comeback and made up ground with tremendous horsepower. Heading down the middle straight, Allen powered by Muxlow for fourth on lap three. Meanwhile, Bozarth was cruising with a six second lead up front. Eakin finally got his chain back on, one lap later, and started just behind Bisceglia. At the finish, the order remained the same. Allen made up considerable ground, but still crossed the line in fifth, behind Capps. When asked to compare their normal race bikes to the vintage machines, Eakin said, "They just don't hop very high and either I almost go over the bars or over backwards turning up the throttle." "Man it's like a rocking horse, so excuse me so I can go get used to my race bike before my regular race," said Bisceglia. In moto two, Bisceglia must have figured it out and definitely had the best reaction off the gate. Bisceglia led Bozarth all the way into turn one, but realized that his brakes weren't working so good. Bozarth easily made the turn and took over the lead. Allen was sitting in third, followed closely by Eakin, Muxlow and Capps. Heading by the line just before the start of lap two, Capps wicked it up and flew by Muxlow. The two exchanged the position numerous times in the moto. On lap two, Bozarth blew the silencer off his machine and was making a racket. Capps blew by Eakin after the white flag and Eakin ate his roost to the checkers. The big battle was up front as Bisceglia just couldn't get the position on Bozarth for a pass. At the checkered Bozarth finished with a three-second lead to complete his 1-1 moto sweep. Results 125 PRO: I. Ryan Huffman (Kaw); 2. Grayson Hart (Hon); 3. Don Bisceglia (Sur). 250 PRO: J.
