~ LOCAL EVENTS ~ Motocrossers and desert racers competed together at Glen Helen's Doublecross GP. Will Davis (21) collected his trophy after winning the Orrville Half Mile at Buckeye Speedway. Chris Carr (20) and Rich King placed second and third, respectively. that battle and finished third, behind Davis and Carr. "There was a little bit of contact," said King in a sarcastic tone. "But that's how I got to third. The track was pretty good, though." After three restarts, the Junior main finally got underway with James Hart leading the way. Kevin Varnes shadowed Hart, while Bill ewkirk, James Hart and Doug O'Boyle scrambled for position behind. Varnes motored past a struggling James Hart for the win aboard his Penn State Cycles/Cycle Shack/Bill Moyer/ - Shoei/M&D-sponsored Rotax. James Hart held on for second, while Newkirk finished a lonely third. Jake Zamke selected the inside pole at the start of the Pro-Am main and went straight to the front of the pa.ck at the start. Mike Hacker stalked Zemke, while Shawn Clark held on to third. Hacker nosed past Zemke at the halfway point and cruised home the winner. Zemke finished second, ahead of Clark. CN Results EX: I. But the North Carolinan's humble words were an understatement, as Davis flat-out disappeared from the. rest of the talent-laden field. Team Harley-Davidson's Chris Carr finished a distant second, while Rich King turned in a credible third-place finish. Carr led the way in tir.ne trials by turning in a hot lap of 21.061 seconds. Davis, Larry Pegram, David Lloyd and Mike Hale rounded out the top five fastest qualifiers. As fast qualifier, Carr selected the inside pole at the start of the first heat race, but was mired at the start and completed the first lap in sixth. King led the way, while Duane Veeder, Jason Fletcher, Harold Dorsey and Mike Varnes separated Carr from the point. Dorsey and Fletcher tangled in turn one and the red flag came out when Dorsey hit the ground hard. King led Veeder at the restart, while Carr smoked into fourth and battled with Fletcher over the runner-up spot. King went on to notch -the win ahead of Veeder, while Fletcher held off Carr for third. "I usually like this track, but not tonight," said Carr. "It's usually fun, not so far, though. We'll make some changes for the main." Davis and Hale battled over the lead in the second heat for the first half of the race. The two riders banged together and provided quite a show before Davis broke free. Steve Burkholder ran a lonely third, while Steve Morehead and Steve Beattie argued over the final transfer. Morehead got the nod, and Beattie would spectate for the rest of the night. Pegram had the third and final heat wired from door to door. Lloyd, Georgie Price and Kris Kiser were in the transfer positions, while Dan Ingram, Doug Davis and Greg Sims were not, but wanted to be. Price got under Lloyd in turn one, as did Kiser and Ingram on the last two laps. Pegram, Kiser, Price and Ingram headed for the main. Pegram's solo heat race win earned him the pole position at the start of the main, but it was Davis who won the dash to the first turn. Once into the lead, the Mother Fletcher's/A&R Racing/Dennis Town/Bell/Fun Products/Motion Pro/Hondaline/Red Line Cycles KTM-sponsored rider was gone. Carr enjoyed a good start from the second row, but his charge was delayed by Price. By the time Carr got under Price in turn four, Davis was long gone. From that point, the race was for third. Price, Hale, Fletcher, Veeder, King and Pegram put on the show as they battled for the position. Pushing, shoving and bumping ensued, and it was King who emerged the victor of GLE HELEN, CA, JULY 5 t was a hot day of racing at the Paul Revere GP, as summer conditions kept racers battling the heat as well as each other. Numerous riders raced more than one class yet different winners emerged in every race. In the first race of the day the Unclassified division, Dave Donatoni shot into the lead from the stand on the right-side-of-the bike, dead engine start. He quickly started stretching out a lead and.then pulled.out an instant 20 seconds over runner-up Danny Hamel. In a sinister move Donatoni had cut off the chicane section of the finish area and cut straight to the next section of the track. The rest of the field took the correct section and continued to fly around the smooth Glen Helen track. This move gave Donatoni the breathing room he needed to continue on uncontested. Johnny Cambell was putting pressure on Hamel and a little farther back Jimmy Lewis and Paul Krause were working their way around Scott Walker. In the end Donatoni was disqualified for the course cutting, "It was an honest mistake. I raced a GP here last weekend and that was the way the course went." The win then went to Kawasakimounted Hamel with Cambell taking second. Lewis followed the third with Krause and Walker in tow. In the Unclassified Beginner class, it was Chris Borgos having a blast on his first ride on a 500cc motorcycle. Enjoying the extra power Borgos pulled away from all the I beginners and worked his way into the novice pack. The Senior and Super Senior riders were next on the course to take advantage of the cool air and the smooth track. The race in this division turned out to be between Yamahamounted Bill Carr and Open rider Ron Dugan. Though never actually slamming Lhe door on each other, the duo pulled out 20 seconds on the entire field. Carl Shuler followed in third overall, second 250, with Dennis Middleton close behind. In the Super Senior division it was a battle between rivals Art Moore and Dave Kersting. Kersting managed LO use sm90th riding and by holding the doublejumping LO a minimum was able to pull away from Moore for the class win. The Vets were next out on the course, and, with a jackrabbit-like start, it was Gary Dudley out in front. Stunning the crowd, Dudley was . double-jumping away from the class. Honda-mounted Dan Ashcraft was trailing in second till near disaster struck for Dudley. After slamming into a hole after a double, Dudley pulled off a miracle save consisting of two 50foot nose "willies." Ashcraft then inherited the lead and slowly pulled out a few seconds a lap. In the 250cc division it was another rivalry with new Vet class member Scott "Axel" Sterns taking on Kenny Parry. Sterns got the early jump and used the jumps to put time on Parry who was having to battle with 500cc class riders Dudley and Scott Walker. At the finish it was Ashcraft and Sterns taking the wins in the 500 and 250cc classes, respectively. A notable ride was turned in by Steve Read on his fullsized Kawasaki KX80. Being severely oULpowered Read was doing all of his passing in the turns with nearly twice the speed of his Vet Novice competitors in the turns. After charging up to third in class Read slid out slowing his effort for a class win. The Expert and Amateur class. was next as temperatures climbed. The track was getting chopped up and at the start of the Open Expert it was Team Green's Danny Hamel shooting out in front. Eating his roost was Johnny Cambell, Greg Zitterkopf and Paul Krause.. Donatoni was in command of the 250cc division this time taking the correct way around the course and setting his sights on a win. Darren Sanford and Jimmy Lewis were picking over second till Sanford fell over in a turn allowing Lewis by. Zitterkopf was making wild charges to the front and almost lost it all as he swapped over a set of doubles. In this move Krause clipped Zitterkopf .on the landing and crashed out of contention. Hamel still held the lead with Cambell now taking his turn at challenging. At this point Ha~el ran into bike problems that slowed his effort allowing Cambell, Zitterkopf and Donatoni to pass. In the 250cc race both Lewis and Sanford ran into problems and dropped out of contention. Donatoni continued his charge and passed Cambell and began to reel-in Zitterkopf. Then Kitterkopf went down hard giving Donatoni the lead and the win. Following in the 250cc class was Scott Walker and Tim Winslow. Zitterkopf still managed to take the 500cc class win followed by Cambell and Jason Trubey. In the final race of the day, - the Novices and Beginners took to the track. Joseph McDade jumped out to a holeshot in the 500cc class, as did Nick Kraus in the 250cc class. On a 125 and on the gas was Scott Reed Jr. leading his wave with younger brother
