Pfetzing, the 1981 Southern California Rookie of the Year, led Faria by a half wheel into tum one. The veteran rider's lead did not last long. He went into the tum a little too fast and drifted in the corner. He gave Faria· enough elbow room to sneak by on the inside and that is just what the wily veteran did. Faria took control of the lead on the back chute and eventually pulled to a two bike length advantage on his Russell Racing! Prime Ticket!Shoei!A-I Plank!OilzalIbacked Godden. While Faria was alone at the head of the pack, Chris Manchester, riding a brand new Jawa, started to work on Pfetzing. Pfetzing rode the dirt line and gave the inside to . Manchester. At the finish it proved costly, as Manchester took second as they crossed under the Paul Neighbors' checkered flag. Fourth spot went to Brent Werner. Gaylon Dickson charged from a mid-pack start into fifth. At the finish it was Ferry, Herman, McMillen, Dickson, Ernest. Moto two saw Herman take the holeshot with Ferry, McMillen, Dan Wilson and Dickson in tow. Ferry took the lead from Herman at mid-moto and never looked back. It was an all Ferry affair, with Dickson passing Wilson on the third to last lap. At the finish, the top five were the same as the first moto with the exception of Wilson besting Mason after charging from second to last. Wilson finished fifth and fifth overall.
