Marc Tiesler took his Honda to point in the first l25cc A moto, with Carsten on his Dunlop/DG/So Cal/Tsubaki/SunStar/ ScottiArai·backed Suzuki in second followed by Jim Mcilvaine, Dengler, Richie Zupko and David Thierry_ Tiesler held Carsten off for two laps before he and Dengler were able to get by. Dengler stayed within two seconds of Carsten before he was able to take the lead on lap four of the IO·lap moto. Carsten retook the lead on lap six when Dengler bobbled through the whoop section. About six seconds behind the leaders, McIlvaine and Tiesler were dicing it out for third. McIlvaine gained the advantage with three laps to go and followed Carsten and Dengler to the finish_ Carsten holeshot moto two with Dengler right behind and again they dueled for the entire moto with Carsten taking the win by a bike length at the checkers. Steve Moquin had a poor start in the first 125cc C race, but was gaining about three seconds a lap on second-place Jason Durham. Steve Lombardozzi, John Monteforte and Trevor Vervaet battled for the third spot for three' laps as Moquin built a 22-second cushion over second-place Durham at the end of the seven lap moto. Moquin powered into the first turn for the second moto holeshot, while Mike Gunning ran second in front of Lombardozzi, Durham Vervaet and Tom Passerella_ Moquin repeated his first-moto ride, putting 16 seconds betwttn himself and second-place finisher Durham, who battled Gunning for four laps before passing him for good. LACR MX win to Smart By Greg Robertson PALMDALE, CA, JUNE 26 Darin Smart and John Valko split moto wins with Smart topping the 250cc Beginner class during California Racing Club's Friday night motocross prqgram at Los Angeles County Raceway. Donald Colyer led the first pan of moto one with John Oseguera, Smart and Valko in close formation. Valko overtook the lead on lap three and started to pull away. On the seventh lap Smart outjumped Oseguera into second place, but Oseguera wasn't giving up c!asily and stuck to Smart's rear fender. Valke's lead was shrinking fast as the battle for second nearly caught him on the last lap. Valko won by a couple of seconds with Smart in second. Colyer had the fastest reaction time and led the second moto for half a lap before Valko blew by. Colyer ran a close second until he got sideways in a turn and Oseguera snuck by. Colyer quickly returned the favor and reclaimed the runner-up position while Valko cruised in front. Smart was making up for a midpack start and passed Oseguera for third and set out after Colyer. Colyer's front end washed out causing him to go down and fall back to fourth place. Smart slowly reeled in Valko for the pass and the overall win. Jim Buntin earned the overall honors in the 125cc ovice class with a perfect 1·1 score. Buntin gated poorly in the first moto but lucked out when Mike Crosby went down in a whoop section and Danny Woodard stalled his bike. By the fourth lap Buntin was up to third and closing fast on Tony Tretta. Buntin got around Tretta and leader Robbie Powell and was untouchable for the moto win. Buntin made it look easy in the second moto as he holeshot and ran away. Powell ran a lonely second while Trella, Crosby and Woodard argued over third place, with Tretta finally claiming the position. Results P/W A: I. Scott Howe (Yam); 2. Walters wins at LACR MX By Tony Alessi PALMDALE, CA, JUNE 21 David Walters used consistency to score the overall 125cc Novice class victory during California Racing Club's motocross at Los Angeles County Raceway. Danny Woodard led the early laps of the first moto, but was passed by Keith Katz at the halfway point in the race. Once in front Katz pulled away from the competition, despite being hampered by late-race engine problems which caused his machine to pop and sputter. Walters jumped ahead in the second moto followed by Woodard, Bryan Carrillo and Katz. Carrillo was no match for Katz and soon dropped off the pace. Katz again experienced engine trouble while all three riders rode in close formation to the checkered flag, where Walters scored the moto and overall wins. Roger DeCoster celebrated Father's Day with his 13·year-old son, Kitch, who was riding in his first·ever race. DeCoster rode inside the top five for most of the 80cc Beginner race, but a slip on the last lap dropped him back to ninth place. Mall Tittlemier won the moto followed by Chris Honnold and Mike Villansyr. "I have been trying to keep him out of racing," Roger DeCoster said about his son, "But he has it in his mind to race, so today is his first time." In the second moto, Kitch DeCoster started midpack and charged up to a fifth·place finish, while-Tittlernier again scored the moto win. Joel Hughes dominated the 125cc Beginner class with a pair of moto victories. Bryan Radinsky pushed to holesholS in both motos, but faded hard after the halfway point in both races, which opened the door for Hughes to slip by and pull away. Results P/W A: I. Gregory grabs Cambridge Short Track win By Tim McBride CAMBRIDGE, MN, JUNE 20 Rookie Pro-Am dirt tracker Norb Gregory scored his first Open Pro class win during the third round of the Dirt Track Riders Association's Championship short track series, held at the Isanti County Fairgrounds. Gregory blasted off the line in the first heat race and led his brother Tim Gregory and Dave Peterson down the back straight. The only change in the running order came on lap four when Peterson powered past Gregory to take the runner-up position. In the main it was Brisbin with the quickest reactions off the line. Brisbin's lead was shortlived though, as Gregory shot by on the front straight. It appeared to be another runaway win for Gregory as he pulled away from the rest of the field. On lap five Tehro' passed Dave Peterson for fourth, and the order was Gregory, Brisbin, Tim Gregory, Tehro, Dave Peterson and John Peterson. As the laps 45
